IDX Questions

TURNMASTER

Active member
My youngest sisters have an IDX. It has been hidden for a few years(?), I think.

Is this a good machine?
How long did whites build the IDX?
Does it have multiple tones?
How does it handle difficult soils?
Is it primarily a park type machine?

I would like to run it a bit and help them to use the machine. Any input appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

Is it the Classic IDX or the IDX Pro? Not much difference, just curious.

Yes, they are. The standard search coil was the 950 and that's fine for more open, sparse-target sites. It is a slow-motion, silent-search discriminator.

From about '98, and then it morphed into the IDX Pro (basically a name change), and was discontinued a few years ago.

No. It is silent-search in the Discriminate mode and produces a single-tone response.

Excellent in bad ground! Actually, it works well in all ground types because the Discriminate mode has a full-range of acceptance, and there is easy access to the Ground Balance trimmer (via a hole under the US flag) making the IDX/IDX Pro (an other Classic series models) very versatile.

If by that you mean a 'coin hunting" detector, one would have to say 'Yes,' bu then ALL makes and models that have a visual Target ID display that is labeled for typical coins and common;y found trash, such as foil and pull tabs, are really aimed at the "park & school hunting group."

However, don't let that foll you because the IDX/IDX Pro, like several other versatile detectors, can do well in other applications such as relic hunting, ghost town hunting, etc., etc.

First, ignore all factory preset markers except for the Frequency Shift. make sure it is set fully clockwise at the factory preset marker. You can set the Sensitivity control at maximum almost all the time, and I prefer to adjust the Discriminate level for a 9-o'clock setting with the toggle set to NORMAL as that will knock out most nails and other small iron, allowing acceptance of most small gold jewelery.

Keep the search coil level with the ground, sweep in straight side-to-side lines, and do not sweep too quickly. Keep the search coil about

First off, Thanks Monte

I believe the machine was tagged Clasic IDX. We'll go with that for now as I believe it to be accurate.

It has the 950 coil.

What is the Freq Shift for? and are we talking about a very small shift or jumps like switching coils on the Xterra series?

I looked at the owners manual online briefly, theirs is gone.

The frequency shift is there to eliminate cross talk with other detectors and/or often helps eliminate electrical interference.

Thanks
