IDX Pro vs M6

New member
I relatively new to metal detecting and would like some opinions. How does the Whites IDX Pro compare to the Whites M6?

I have an IDX Pro with Mr Bills Mods. I really like it. I have never used an M6. Some of the advantages of the M6 that I see right off the bat are: The M6 has VDI numbers. The M6 can share coils with the MXT & DFX. The IDX Pro can share coils with the XLT, but some say the XLT is on the way out. Actually since the Prizm 6t some say the M6 is on the way out. I think the IDX Pro with the Royal 800 coil is a coin getter. I know a used IDX Pro is cheaper than an M6. So picking between the two I pick the Prim 6t. Backlight, VDI, notch discrimination, Simplicity of use, weight, 9 tone ID. Just a sample of the features it has. Oh by the way a smaller coil should be at the dealers in a couple of weeks. With Whites you are good with any of the three choices. Best of luck to you.

The M6 as a tone ID and an automatic ground balance feature. It also uses all of the coils that the DFX and MXT uses which is a very wide variety.
The IDX has a lot of limitations, you can make them deep with mods but They are limited in features and coils.

I don't know about the M6. But After using Whites detectors for over 10 years. I now have a IDX Pro its very light and very easy to use . Ive found mercury head dimes over 6 inches deep. It has good discrimination. You cant miss a coin target. It will pic up the smallest of foil. What i miss is a target depth indicator. I'm looking forward to a mod to help with ground balancing high minralized ground . Its a fun machine to use. The M6 may offer more capability's . You will have to test both to find the one you like. I found this late 1950s kids badge recently under a very old tangerine tree at my1930s era farm. Notice mine has 6 points the newer one has five.

knowing them I am able to grab the one that will serve me well for the task at had. Each hunting site can present somewhat different challenges, and while both are a slow-motion, quick-response type detector.

The best feature about both these models is that they share the same physical configuration. The only differance is that the M6 has the 'wide-body' display pod. It is an excellent rod/housing set-up that is well balanced and comfortable. The trigger-toggle location is perfect.

Both the M6 and IDX Pro have:

I must say that I really enjoy this forum and have found all the information posted to be very useful. I plan on having a Whites in a week or less and must now endure the waiting period required for the ground to thaw. I think the wait will be most difficult but thanks for all the help, I'm sure more questions will follow after I get the detector in use.

Another excellent comparison by Monte. Way to go.

I knew Monte would give the best comparison on this topic. I was actually looking forward to reading it. Good to the last drop.

both good units, I have own the MXT and now use the M6, Monty comparison was excellent. One should decide the type of hunting and go from there. I would look for a good deal on either unit. Good luck.

I don't have either but have swung the M6 a few times and where I used it, it was a nice smooth machine. I have heard good about it as well as many good things about the IDX Pro.

Wow that is a great review of these two machines.I have learned a few things. I am now planing to change the 950 stock coil to the 5.3 bulls eye and plan on getting a 4" coil. I'm probably passing up a few things with the large 950 coil at this old ranch. Thanks Monty for this very detailed and helpful review.

I have a M6 and a member in our club has an IDX. We've hunted side by side before and the IDX does very well. Monte said it best, both machines have their place, just depends on what options you need.

I've never used the M6 but I do own two IDX Pro's with Mr. Bills Mods. and I can say they are very impressive detectors. I've been using mine mainly for ghost town hunting with the 6 inch coil and I'm not sure there is a better detector out there for hunting trashy iron infested sites. I haven't really used the 9 1/2 coil for deep silver hunting in some of our old parks and lawns yet but air testing in my house with the big coil blew me away. I'm not prone to exaggeration and I don't rely on air tests alone so don't roll your eyes but my modified IDX Pro will hit a nickel in disc. mode at almost 14 inches with a solid lock, a silver dime at 12 inches and a silver quarter at 14 inches. It will hit a couple of thin wire 14kt. rings about the size of a dime at 10 inches. Like I said these are just air tests and I usually don't do any air hunting but when my ghost town hunting season is over I will take off the small coil and hit some old parks and see what it will do with the big coil on some deep silver.

We had a nice day here in PA last week. I took my newly purchased IDX Pro ( w/ mods ) out to an old house that is getting torn down for a parking lot. The problem with old houses around here is the amount of trash & iron. I'm talking mid 1800's dated house. The IDX pro performed well. I only took the 8 inch coil. That was mistake number one. Being there when everyone else is stripping siding, copper pipes, electrical wire, tree lumber, basically anything worth a penny was mistake two. What I really needed was my 6 inch coil or even the snooper coil. To get to the point I would say that I had to back the detector way down on the sensitivity. I also had to set the discrimination high. Hunting places like old houses in my area depth isn't really a factor. Target separation is the big one. The IDX Pro was more power than I needed. I didn't miss the VDI as much as I thought I would. Depth meter has always been a non factor for me. I'm going back when the dozers move some soil. So is a smaller coil.

I just got my M6 setup the way I want it and love it! Just under 5 pounds.
