Idiots caught metal detecting at a cemetery in Grass Valley!:ranting:

Hello everyone, I haven't been out with my beloved X-70 for the last two moths since my lady had a kidney transplant and I haven't worked or been tecting during this time. I wish I was writing about cool finds but instead I got all pissed off because we were watching the news and heard about some dumb people detecting at a cemetery, carrying their detector and a shovel. A dad and a son looking for treasures. Neighbors saw the people and call the cops, they were not charged since they said they were looking for old coins. I think this is such a bad rap for us. and then we wonder why they're trying to ban metal detecting in places.
I mean have some common sense and be respectful and carrying a shovel? Geese!!!
I wish I can go out soon again. I'm just glad my 28 year Queen is doing ok now. I'm enjoying this time with my little one too, he's always asking me when can we go out metal detecting again. Pretty cool coming from a 2 and 9 month little munchkin. :detecting:
Well I feel a bit better now, it feels nice to write to all of you (I miss my MD family) and I hope to hear what you guys think and finally hope to go out tecting this weekend! God bless you all!!!

Hi Yaridnac, hope that your good lady is recovering well, sounds as if you've both been through a rough time. I agree with you about the dopes hunting in a cemetery, bad form all round and makes detectorists look like grave robbers. Anyway, hope you can get out swinging again soon and find a motza.. the thing is you'd be surprised at how many people think cemetaries are great places to detect. Several different times when I was hunting private yards, home owners would say to me "I bet that so and so cemetary would be a real neat place to detect"
and these are usually older people who tell me this too. We have a huge one in my town, and I am shocked so many people have suggested I go there. I never have and never will, just thought I'd mention it to you that a lot of people see nothing wrong with it.

Never have myself either, not too fussed on old coins.
However have read on various sites that detecting in old cemetaries is good for finds, so it seems to be acceptable practice here in Oz.
I dont see too much wrong with it, as long as common sense prevails.
A shovel is poor form though, bit of an overkill.

Lou.

Take care of the love of your life and we all wish her well as the time will come when you can get out again..Being a retired Pa. State Trooper the act you describe is immoral and illegal as each plot is private property(trespassing) and imagine digging would be damaging private property also...Always some goof ball to trespass, leave a mess in huntable areas to ruin our hobby or make some areas off limits due to their actions...

I know the MXT forum posted that Lost Treasure Magazine did an article on how good cemeteries were to detect. steelheadforever, and Nancy Fillman contacted them and had them remove it from being viewed on line.
These are steelheadforevers exact words to the person that brought it to their attention. Great job to both of them for taking a stand against this despicable act.

Dirtdigginlady thanks for the insight on Lost Treasure Magazine article. I went to the Lost Treasure site this morning and went to the "Lost Treasure Tube" to watch their videos. I viewed the Video titled " Metal Detecting the Movie" I could not believe that they were metal detecting in a cemetery. I guess Lost Treasure Magazine condones that kind of detecting, but I personally don't condone it and never will. JMHO Dennis in Idaho

Glad to hear your lady is getting better. My wife just celebrated 2 years with her new kidney. Life is great huh?

I seen that article about detecting cemeteries and they claimed passer by's hardly gave them a second glance---GUESS AGAIN!----Seems to me like your own conscience & respect for the dead ought to keep you out of detecting cemeteries.---If that isn't enough reason-people buy the burial plots (private property of the family, I suppose).--So you would be trespassing on a WHOLE LOT of private propertys, right?---Common sense has gotta prevail somewhere along the line!------Del

IDIOTS....pretty well sums it up. You are so right. A prayer for your Queen, hope she is doing well. TomB

I am very glad to hear your wife is doing better.

I would never thing of hunting in a cemetary. I grew up out in the country. We had little private cematerys all over. Had one on our farm. We (my dad and I) built a fence around it. Kept it up and it was not even names we knew?

I really do not understand some folks, Beale.

I' m so glad we're all in the same page, Thanks for all of your replies about the subject and about my Lady.
xwyokid Thank you!!! and congratulations too. It is awesome to hear that from you too. Advances in technology can keep our families happy and together longer. Take care my peeps! :clapping: and happy :twodetecting:

I just hate reading stories of idiots...............Like the Father Son team. Not only is it bad for detecting image..but just think what other disrespect he is teaching his Son.............Sad !!!

I also read that article about detecting in cemeteries , and there is a very old cemetery in the boonies near me and after reading that article I was almost tempted to give it a try , but I couldn't bring myself to try it. It just didn't seem right even though the article made it sound perfectly fine. Now I'm really glad that I didn't give it a try. CoinShooter-Craig

If someone detects a cemetery and ends up digging up a body that would be one deep seeker. I have read articles on detecting in the cemetery and all I have ever heard people say is detecting where people often park produces well. I have never heard of someone detecting over a grave but I am sure there are people out there.

Cemeteries are one of those places. Burial grounds deserves the respect of all. Just in principle if nothing else.

What about detecting a torn down church in front of a old cemetery. I thought of doing the area around where the church once stood. The cemetery is like 20 feet from the cemetery

Inside is off-limits. However, the areas around old cemeteries -- e.g., a little clearing outside the gates, an old road nearby, etc -- can be great for hunting, espeically the places where people were getting in and out of carriages and tying up horses before walking on the grounds.

Even so, I still only hunt those areas if they're off the beaten path and won't attract a lot of attention. I've actually had some busybody come up to me on my own property before and start to tell me about "How bad 'those things' are and how disrespectful it is to be digging up holes and ruining peoples' lawns" etc etc etc. (I was a lot nicer telling them to scram than I should have been.)

Questionable as to whether or not I would detect there. Sort of a respect thing for the deceased. Although, I would be tempted!

Yes, hope your lady has a full recovery.
But hunting in grave yards???? Gimme a break!
For those that illegally hunt those areas, I hope one night, on a cold dark moonless night, they are laying in bed, and they hear this coming from outside their front door with a haunting voice: "I want my stuff back that you took from my grave yard." And then their door knob rattles as "it" tries to get in. Then, after the guy cleans his drawers and the bed sheets, he heads back to the grave yards and puts the stuff back.
