Ideas on places to detect in Virginia

I live in Northern Virginia and am new to detecting. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on where I should take my new Xterra 70? I would love any suggestions that anyone may have. Thank you for all the help.

Cheers
Kevin

Start with your own yard. Not only will you learn how to use the X-Terra more effectively, digging holes in your own yard should help develop better detecting habits before you embark on the world! You indicated you were a relic hunter. Spend some time in the local libraries, historical museums, reading through old newspapers and historical documents. RESEARCH is the best tool you will ever have for this hobby. And unfortunately, one that is overlooked by many. The days of going to the local school yard and digging a pocketful of silver coins is gone. Most of the "easy" places to hunt have been hunted by hundreds of detectorists before you. The time you spend researching will be the one aspect of this hobby that separates you from those who aren't willing to make the effort. JMHO HH Randy

Hi Kevin,

I live in Northern Virginia(Falls Church City) and bought an X-Terra 50 a few months ago to start the hobby.. I plan on using it mostly for relic hunting outside Richmond where I own some property and also at the Delaware shore where I have a home. I know Fairfax County has strict policies banning detecting on any parks.A few buddies of mine up here have been detecting for a long time and have connections with land owners in Centreville and Manassas. Like Digger said they researched the areas and contacted owners for permission. They have found quite an assortment of buckles, breastplates, buttons and bullets. Where are you located at?

I live in Bristow, just outside of Gainesville. I have been going to areas where they are clearing land. Have not had any big finds yet. I am sure it will happen soon.
