Here are some of the things I try to keep in mind when going out detecting - just thought I'd pass them on for consideration.
1. RESEARCH - get permission beforehand- don't rely on getting it when you arrive. If you are doing nearby towns then get a map of sites from online or go to the library & copy the maps in the town's phone books. Most librarys carry nearby town's phone books & most have a map section inside. This is for schools & parks mostly.
2. BACK UP SITES - Always have one or more backup sites to do in case your main site doesn't work out or isn't available. And don't short time one site to get to the next. Do each one well or leave the goodies for others.
3. EQUIPMENT - Don't scrimp on tools - pay good money for a good digger and batteries. Cut back on lesser things in life but not detecting things.
4. ENERGY - A good breakfast or lunch, water & snacks will keep you going. It's rough when the finds keep coming but you are running out of energy.
5. ATTITUDE - Probably the most important of all - a good positive attitude will bring you many more finds than a poor one. If you aren't up for it don't go detecting, as your problems will keep you from finds & from having fun.
Having made all these mistakes at one time or another I wanted to pass them along to you
