idea....anyone done something similar?

After having owned a White's DFX where it showed you a picture id on the screen of what your finding I kind of got spoiled. Once we sold it and got the Minelab Xterra 30 where all you have is the number to go by we decided to do this. We ran several items under the detector to find out what number they pulled and then we printed it out on the computer. Then we put it into a plastic case and taped it to the top of the detector. This way its flexible and won't break if it hits something. Was kind of curious if anyone else had come up with anything like this. Always looking for new ideas. Thanks.

I did almost the exact same thing except it's not as nice looking as yours. I put a little more info. Thursday I found a 14 K white gold ring that locked in on 3. It's usaually a very small piece of foil.I almost didn't dig it. Has 4 diamonds too!! Any thing from above - negative signal right up to 24 and even slightly higher may be gold jewelry. Alloy,Size shape and density cause the variance. I dug so much junk my arm was beat when I was done. I never dig any pennies dimes that are shallow. Nickels are a different story.
Back in 1973 my dad bought a Relsco I think I spelled it right I was 13 and it got me hooked. My probe gets better depth LOL. Just got back into it a few weeks back buying a terra 50 and have made a few very good finds. I do mostly relic hunting war 1812 stuff.
It's really cold and wet here and snow is a coming soon. I hate the white stuff.

take care Jerry From western NY

Very nice,

But having a piece of paper telling me what number is what in the ground, will have me miss many other objects that are worth digging up.

I have much better success finding the good stuff digging everything in my path, despite what a number tells me.

Dig...Dig...Dig

Actually we dig everything up anyway if it has a strong signal but we like having the numbers just to have an idea of what it might be. Trust me we've dug plenty of pull tabs just on the off chance it was something better. Happy digging :clapping:

I hunted about three hours this weekend with the XT70 and found that I can pretty much tell when I have detected a certain kind of pull tab (square) by the number 18 and particular sound it made. I am also finding that certain other items give a out a distinct sound due to their composition. After you hear the sound more than once and digging the item you have a pretty good idea as to what is in the ground before you dig. I tested this practice on more than one example just to make sure I wasn't missing something and was still fooled on occasion. But my point is the numbers don't always tell the whole story. The sound is the rest...of..the...story (sorry, couldn't resist).
