I got out about 1 hour before dark to try out my new Garrett Pro pointer. I found this I button... I've never seen one with the dot on it. I can't see a back mark but it needs more cleaning. I thought it may be cw era but with the dot on the front and with the back looking as it does I have my doubts
 
I found an "I" button myself this morning.
It looks like yours had an iron loop on the back.
It looks suspicious, but I'm no button expert.
Here is a pic of the one I found.. backmark... SUPERIOR QUALITY.
This one is definately civil war period.
 
I believe that yours is called a block I. I just haven't seen one like mine(with that dot) I'll call it cw era until I find out different..lol
 
Looks real to me. Could the shank have been smashed to the side somehow and poked the "dot" into the front of the button?
