Can someone ID this for me Please, Its made out of Led, Thank You MickFin
 
These are still used today. Those little cloth things that people put over chairs and the pews in churches that say "Reserved" have these sewn in them as weights. I don't think it dates to the Civil War or it would have had more oxidation and come out of the ground white.
 
I have only found hem weights at old sites. No where else. All of mine look the same as yours.
 
You don't have to be in a Civil War site to find them. They are also found around old homesites. I believe I read where they were sewed into curtains also. And as fiat128 stated they are still in use today. I got my info about them possible being used as buttons during the Civil War from Howard Crouch's book, Civil War Artifacts,Jonathon.
