ID numbers for different targets

I spent the other day waving a variety of objects under my detector and writting down the numbers for each item. I need to put them in order to better understand what they might mean but noticed that some items had identical numbers.

I wonder if there is a list on here of a wide variety of items? I will probably post my list here once I get it ordered. Once I do that I am thinking that I will scan the duplicates to see if there is anything that might give one away.

I know it is not exact because I saw what putting them on their side can do to the readings as well as some of the objects I found that are pretty crumpled. But I think it will help me hone in on what I might be interested in digging. So what are your numbers and if you have duplicates what do you do to decide or do you just dig?

If you will send me an email to firefly@aledobb.com I will send you an excel sheet with the numbers on it. You can print it out and use it. Just the ticket I think. It is for the Ex II.

It's not a matter of keeping track...it's a matter of knowing the range of good targets and way they generally come up. There's more to it though...like your Sovereign, we also have the tones. Which are the MAIN factor that many go by. And there's also the Smartscreen display. So on a silver coin you would have the high pitch unmistakable sound of silver, a number of say 00-29 for zero ferrous content and high conductivity, and a Smartscreen cursor in the extreme upper right hand corner, as shown below. It's all about information...the more, the better. Same as the high pitch of silver and the 180 meter reading (or 550 for the older ones?) on your Sovereign...that's a digger!

Note that in this picture I've done a little creative editing to show both the digital and Smartfind screens. You can switch between them with the touch of the "Detect" button. The Explorer SE has the same screens.

I try to look at what numbers are good ones and I will focus on those. That being said, as I was organizing my numbers, there are junk items that have the same numbers as good coins or jewlery. I have two pieces of aluminum that read 00-29 every time. Pieces of copper pipe which I would think would be a rare find even though I have found 3 pieces of pipe in the short time I have been out hunting, also gives a reading that matches up with pennies and dimes.

I use ferrous tones but I like that I can confirm what I think I hear with the digital readout. I am hoping that in time I will be able to hear some difference between a good target verses a garbage target by a difference in the tone characteristics.

I put my list together last night and scanned a few more after doing the list so I should have time to post my list here. My list contains more junk items because I found so much of it and I also wanted to see where there were overlaps.

If one is just looking for rings, why not just use the GOLD ALUMINUM LEAD setting on the bottom of the screen (Quattro)? That way numbers etc don't matter, (or do they?) Just trying to learn.

while I am hunting. It works quite well, and you have trouble remembering all the numbers at first (or in my case, memory was the 2nd thing to go) it will help you understand what it MOST LIKELY is.

I know what the numbers for regularly found coins and such are most of the time, but I get a little adrenalin bump when I see a dollar gold signal, or a II cent nickel. I think it adds to my enjoyment. LOL

Great looking Sheet....Sent you my mail...I'm intent on learning this fine detector & with all the great help here, it makes everything SOOO much easier...Thanks a bunch...

Its sure nice to have an idea what numbers will come up with for various objects but remember if a Barber quarter has a nail laying next to it throw the numbers, tone and target crosshair placement out the window...Do take this into consideration as you may lose a good target...Met a fellow Explorer user in the park the other day and yep he had a ID sheet right in front of him on the rod...Want to thank the fellows that included nice ID sheets in their posts....and would recommend for many...As good as an Explorer is it can be fooled and it takes time in the field when to dig the iffies....

I have found that the clads, as they get older and deeper will read alot different from what you will get in an air test. I have had clad quarters reading from 00-29 through 04-26. I have to use digital because of my eyes but I listen for the tone and then check the #'s. If it even close I'll dig it and 9 out of 10 it's a coin. Unfortunately down here were I am the old places are either filled over or asphalted so not much silver any more. .02

What you just posted...Thanks guys:please:...It is a real help knowing the primary #s....I don't have any gold coins for example or rings for that matter & all the information is usefull...HH...TT

While at the beach last week I picked up 3 rings and about 7 dollars in clad... NO PENNIES! Easily distinguishable on the EX II and didn't want to waste the time and energy, but I got bamboozeled into digging up about 10 because they were very deep and read exactly like a dime. However, on several occasions the machine would do an erratic dance of target ID's and sounds. On this target, I dug it up because it was so interestingly odd. Up came a partial clam shell with a chunk of tar on it, including a piece of rusty iron, a clad quarter and a Lincoln cent all merged into one piece.

Now that was the beach and I was primarily searching for gold and silver. Each area carries its own unique set of circumstances, but don't just rely on the chart (I also carry one to refer to). HH

At the beach a lot of the deeper zinc pennies also can have a thick crust on them and be bubbled up to where they more closely mimmick normally lower tones and readings that may prompt one to dig. There's nothing worse than busting your butt to dig up a super deep crusty penny!

Well here are my numbers. I did a quick scan last night but I think something was wrong as the numbers seem way off for a penny. got 17-01 for canadian, and a 1946 Wheat. Think I had X-1 switched again or something else was going on. But these numbers I think are good for the stuff I found. I think I am going to print this thread out and add the other numbers that seem to apply. Thanks for all the imput because being new to this I know these numbers are not then end of the learning curve. But I know it has helped me start to make sense of all that this machine can put out.

There is a park near a river not too far from my house. Going nuts detecting there because every stinkin' linkin' has a real read patina to it and ids as silver.
