ID number on college ring?

One of my friends lost his Texas A&M ring while playing softball back in 1974. The old field is still there, he said that he had his ring on his finger going into the game and when it was over he noticed it was gone, he was sick. Anyway, he said it was a large 18k ring, anyone know what number that would come in on the G2? It's possible someone picked it up but I've got to try. Thanks for any info. John

Its gonna be in the zinc penny signal neighborhood most likely...maybe he can tell you what position he was playing, what hand he was wearing it on, if he is right or left handed? If he's left handed, and was wearing the ring on his right hand, it would interfere with the glove...and vice versa, if he is right handed, and it was on his throwing arm, (right) think about trajectory, ...maybe he wasn't wearing a glove, and it was just a pick up game? Any info he can remember about the game or some unusual acrobatics that transpired? Questions like this MIGHT just narrow it down to a specific area for you. If its there you have a good chance of finding it, and possibly some others... I'm hoping he is lefty, and played right field, and the ring fell off between the dugout and the position as he removed his glove coming or going to that spot... Mud

Depending on the size of the ring and 18k will read higher than 14k.

I have two 14k rings not very large and both hit low 70s on ID.

A very tough find with all the trash and stuff. Depending on how much/how many times you can hunt it
If its a one time hunt i might run Disc up higher but its a fine line good luck.

Jimmie is right handed and was playing 1st base. He had his ring on his right hand so no telling where the ring went to. Hope I can find it for him. Thanks for the imput. John

I find a lot of rings along and right behind the first base line. That area gets a lot of traffic. Like Gman said, if its a big one it might ping up in the dime range as well as high penny. So you sort of got it narrowed down...infield, first base to dugout, shallow outfield along first base and behind second. Just stand at the first base and think a little about throwing somebody out at third, or second...out of bounds down the line popups, etc...at least you know your not gonna hafta swing deep center field...It should bang hard and clear when you run a coil over it...its not like hunting for a 1 gr engagement ring thats for sure. Good luck, and let us know!

72 --- 79

hmmmmmm, could be anywhere that he was during the game. 1st base area, running the bases, sitting in the dugout, throwing the ball, swinging the bat etc: cover all these areas well. you dont have to find it the first trip out!!! goodluck

A large 18kt gold ring will read like a zinc penny? That is fascinating. Does this work for other makes and models of machines? Because if you cherry pick and disc out zincs, well, go figure. Maybe a good reason why many hunters hunt all metal all the time and dig it all. thanks for the info.

This is from the Fisher CZ manual with CZ 70 There are 7 segments on the CZ 70
Testing 255 gold rings .
0 rings fell in iron segment
2% fell in Hi coin or dime quarter segment.
4% fell on Zinc icon
The rest or 94% fell between foil and Nickle. but this is with a CZ

The bug reads a 78 on a Zinc and i might go + and -- one digit depending how much you want to dig.
But i might not either.

Well it should go from 68 to 76 if it is a 18k gold which is below the penny range.... if it is 14k a little higher 71-79.....

Gold bug is different to some of other machines like a ring on gold bug comes in at zinc or just below comes in around pull tab on my etrac so yes they are different, it really depends on diameter on the gold bug IMHO.
