I'd Like to Understand the Quick Mask a bit better.

(I do have Andy's book and it's been read and highlighted) Settings are Auto +2, deep on, fast off, high trash, difficult ground, the rest are standard stock from the factory. I'm using the 8" SunRay coil because of the amount of trash. I am finding targets in the discriminate mode that show a 12FE and 44CO, or numbers that are typically other US Coins, and it's showing the coin half way or more down the depth scale. The sound is similar to a shallower coin only not as strong as one on the surface. There are other metal objects near the target I think. I switch to Iron Mask that's wide open and run it over the target. Sometimes it'll almost repeat the 12-44 and then it shows 23-42. or 29-44, etc. Nothing is consistent about those. Then it'll come back in a 12-44 and then go back to the weird number. If I put it back in discriminate it wont' pick the object up all the time but when it does it's near a 12-44. I dug one of those targets today and after I got down 12" I found rusty pieces of iron about the size of a nickel. Anybody got any ideas how to determine dig or don't dig and how not to dig when it's the iron? What's your experience and advice. Dig em all until I figure it out? I may have to do that. I am just wondering if I am missing good old deep targets because I am trying to avoid the deep iron stuff. I have this experience at three regular sites I hunt in different parts of the town. Thanks....Jim

I think you nailed it with "The sound is similar to a shallower coin only not as strong as one on the surface." Sound is always the king and you are right those ferous items can sound really good. But there is a difference. Learn the difference.

The deep iron is a come and go signal usually and is kinda flat and dull sounding and rarely repeats from more than one direction. A deep coin will be a full sounding resonant tone and is usually repeatable from 90 degrees and the sound will usually stay the same. I have never found deep iron that is repeatable for 90 degrees and if it does the tone will significantly change.

What kind of tones are you running. I'm using multi conduct and I can't hear a difference between the little pieces of deep iron and a week signal coin. I'm also getting good two way signals. The FE bounces from 12 to 29 and the CO is 44 to 46.

OK! Got that! Repeatable from two directions. I know about that but...I have read from some of the hot hunters here on findmall who find silver regularly that are rewarded with a good coin when they only get the tone/reading from ONE direction. And...sometimes in my case the questionable signal is repeatable from both directions but just barely and it's not consistent. (I hunt in Multi). I can start digging them all and I'll find out for sure but if there's an easier way I'd like to try it first. It's the old conflict we all experience..."Should I have dug that? Maybe I am passing some good old stuff!" Thanks....Jim.

Run your machine in fast and slow your swing speed down to a crawl, this will help seperate the targets. Whether I would dig the target depends on where I was detecting. In a park or sports ground I would only dig consistent clear solid signals, which can be pin pointed more accurately and recovered with minimum ground disturbance. Usually if a target is hard to find or gives an iffy signal it is not a coin. You are using a small coil which will also pick up smaller rubbish targets especially in a high sensitivity setting, Try reducing sensitivity, this will cut down your signals from deep rubbish items and highlight signals from stronger good targets. good luck seeya Neilo
