ID HELP

Found this near an old pre-Civil War Church. It was very deep and covered with green corrosion (Copper or Brass). I used electrolysis on it, and gave it some color to see the details better. Found in a big Civil War Area. Any Ideas. Eagle Head and Shield.

I think it's the bell part to an old time door bell. The part you have goes on the inside of the door, so people can hear it ring. The outside part had something like a key wind to a grandfathers clock that the person on the outside turned and a small set of clappers in the bell housing would slap the inside of the bell. I remember my Grandparents house in Cumberland,MD had one on the door. Most I've seen were plain. You have a nice one with a design.

Good thought. Thats what I was thinking at first also, except for the fact its heavy and the metal is thicker than a bell would be, and if you tap it with anything it doesn't ring at all.

I think this is what you are talking about except this bell won't ring. Unless it just makes a clattering sound.

The Phoenix was a mythological bird that rose up from the ashes...... That appears to be your design. Very popular during the mid 1800s. Nice find, David@Dixie
