ihuntrelics!

New member
I posted this relic a couple of years back and had everyone stumped as to what it was. A few guesses were that it may be a gun part or used to lock a bayonet into place. It was found in a confederate camp with bunches or rebel relics. Here's some pics showing measurements and the weight in grains. Anyone have any ideas on it's ID?
Thanks,
Scott

hi scott! it sure does remind me a lot of the brass whatzit i found in the spring at the old mansion site - it turned out to be one of the riveted on feet of an old oil lamp base! a couple of weeks ago, i found the rest of the oil lamp base not far from where i found the foot. yup! mine looks similar, has a hole too. hope it helps, and hh,

hi scott, the base of the oil lamp was pretty mangled up, so i scrapped it out last month. but... a photo of the leg is near top page in the "whatzit" forum on here. it has a curly, odd curvature with the single hole too. although it's not exactly like yours, it looks to be for a similar use. thanks, i'm just learning photobucket, and hh,
