I broke thru the beep and dig barrier and decided to get a ID machine again. I do very well with Tesoros digging modern Canadian clad just forced to dig a lot of junk along with them.
As the coin composition is basically nickel plated steel, disc can't be set too high or you loose dimes and some quarters. Have to hunt in all metal and then check the tone in disc to determine if to dig or pass.
After careful deliberation and reading of all ID detectors, find most have difficulty getting an accurate display or lock on with theses coins or just plain call the coins junk......there is no ideal ID machine out there. Some do very well after a learning curve is met in the field digging targets.........I decided upon the ID Edge.
Reasons for the choice, Fishers like iron, multi 4-tones, number ID, ground balances in both all metal and disc modes, simple operation, loghtweight, deep, multiple coil choices...
As well as being a cherry picker with notching to look for the $1 and $2 coins. Ability to notch out the over abundant pennies.
Best excuse to give my wife why I need a new detector---- she can use it to hunt in preset modes and able to ID a target before having to bend over and dig, she does have some physical disabilities and a good ID machine would be a plus. Example is that she can hunt in jewelry mode at the beach. Or hunt listening for the high sounds for silver and watch the ID numbers in and listen gold tonal area. Being lightweight is a bonus, just a tad heavier than the Tesoro Silver Umax I bought for her. The unit is or can be set up as a turn on and go machine for her........
In reality I bought the unit for myself.......................thanks to Jabbo and a few others who supplied me with some performance info, I now own an Edge.
Found a nice ID Edge with 3 coils, bench tested it against the Canadian claddage, silver, gold, iron, pull tabs, gold. From all air testing and trying different headphones, preliminary conclusions is that the Edge will make an excellent detector for what I want it to do in disc mode. The biggest problem I see is the CA dime, some date compositions will fall in the - numbers and some fall into the + numbers. Everything else will read within a 4 number spread. Also find that the dime can still be heard when passing it under the coil with a cut nail.
Hoped to get out yesterday to hunt but, the weather would not cooperate. Weather looks fine this morning, ground damp but will head out in about another to an old school. Will report back with my finds.
More than likely I may be looking to purchase another Edge if the price is right. If I like the Edge, the wife will love it.
