ID EDGE RELEVATION REGARDING CANADIAN COINS:canadaflag:

Sven

Well-known member
In my previous post I mentioned that the Edge would not pick up Canadian coins on edge like my Tesoros do in disc mode.
Only drawback to the Edge.
Boy was I right and wrong. Did all my orig air testing waving the coin under the coil flat, they all ID'd with numbers of some sort or another.
had that part down and carried that onto actual hunting at the schoolyards. Listened to the multitones and dug a lot, mostly pennies. Couldn't figure out why the lack of dimes, nickels, quarters, Loonies and Toonies compared to the amount of pennies found. Usually the ratio is about 50% clad and 50% pennies approx. A lot of those coins are found on edge or slight edge
with the Tesoros. So why wasn't the Edge picking them up???

Thought about it today and wanted to do another air test with the Edge and Tesoro.
First off air tested in Disc mode set up with disc at -3. No Canadian clad on slight edge or edge would sound off.
Disappointed until I switched to all metal mode, waved the coins under the coil on edge. It sure picked them up!!!
And at a greater depth than the Tesoros. Then why not in disc mode. Looked at the ID numbers in all metal mode and they were almost identically opposite
of what they were when flat. They would come in -20 to -29 with a clear crisp dig signal and lock on within 2 numbers. Only exception of the quarter which ID'd at -16 to -19.
So I switched over to disc mode and set disc to -30.
Yup, they now sound off with a low tone and ID deep as in all metal mode but now have the multi tones.

So have to adjust to a new learning curve. I should now rehunt some of those places with the new setting.
By the way nails sound off with a double blip to distinguish them from modern Canadian claddage.

So my original thought about the Edge being a great detector for Canadian clad was right.
Happy camper now..

Only two things I don't like about the Edge, the hand grip, will be changing over to foam and the arm rest ( a little big), like the Tesoro arm rests better.
:clapping:

Sven, I run my Edge with zero iron discrimination so that I can hear it all, even nails. Many times I get a high tone followed by a low tone from the same piece of iron when swept again. The false high tone from iron happens when coil is not centered over iron target.. Wrapped my handgrip with leather, over lapped and glued the overlap.

Spent some time, 6 hours, learning the Edge today with my new found info regarding coins on edge falling into the neg numbers.
Backed off my disc to -30 watched the meter and listened to the tones as well as not digging certain numbers I felt were pennies.
From my air testing Canadian coins on edge gave - numbers I thought would be accurate. In actual hunting conditions the - numbers
were a bit off from that.

The multiple tones were driving me crazy after while, just wanted to hear a mono tone...LOL but, kept on going.
Did better this weekend than last and picked up quite a few coins on edge and I mean on edge within the 4-6" range. There was a spread of
numbers on a given coin after a while deciphering the tone and number I was pretty accurate guessing what is below. The only coin to actually lock on
to one number is the quarter on edge, a solid -21.

By the end of the evening, began getting used to the multiple tones and liking the Edge more. I can now see why folks say they didn't like it at first.
Dug a lot of junk to day, just to get a good feel for the numbers and tones. I did find that high tone +36 always turned out to be junk, seems I remember when I had a Garrett Gti 1500 years
ago that the highest number bar always turned out to be junk also. So wondering if any good targets are ever found at +36?

Todays finds besides the foil canslaw, nails, pull tabs, bottle caps found these coins in areas hunted by others.

2--Toonies ($2 coins)
3--Loonies ($1 coins)
5--Quarters
6--Dimes
8--Nickels
33--Pennies

Going to try out the smaller and larger coils next time out.
