My brother recently purchased an X-50. I use an MXT. Today we headed to the shores of Lake Michigan in northern In. He ground balanced at 6, and punched the sensitivity to 16, and searched in all metal mode. He has noticed that the X-50 shoots alot of 45's on the meter. I've read that this is usually iron squeaking in here and there. And for the most part, this is true, especially if one gets a shallow reading and no target is found within reasonable depth.
Here's the odd thing. He got a 45 and depth indicated 10 inches. He dug a penny from a depth of 12 inches. He is now confused,as I am, why the 45 was not a half dollar or silver dollar, or at least a piece of iron or aluminum can. So both of us being dazed and confused decided to bury a quarter at nine inches. My MXT read 83 to 86. His X-50 read 45, (consistently). He is now uncertain as to dig or not to dig 45's since they seem to come up quite often, not only on beach sand, but also at inland sites that we go to.
Is he setting his machine up wrong ( maybe too much sensitivity ), although he did lower the setting to 12 on testing the quarter and then could not even get a signal. It took me 25 years to convince him to upgrade from his Whites 6000 series ll hipmount. I think I'm in trouble!!!! Anyone have any ideas to this occurrence? Anyone else experiencing this quirk? Help, before he claims my MXT from me.
Thanks Pat
