I wore through the handle on my Garrett digger, again

UTDigger

New member
I like my Garrett Edge Digger. I used it so much that I wore through the rubber on the end of the handle, so when I dug a plug, I was pushing hard right on the bare metal on the handle. That would really hurt after a few digs. So I bought a new Garrett Edge Digger, and eventually I wore through the rubber on that one, too. At $40 each, I didn't want to keep buying a new digger every year or so, so I just sat down and stared at my digger and thought for a while.

I finally decided to find a way to attach a golf ball to the end of the handle so the force my hand pushing on the handle would be spread over a larger area. Here's what I did:
1. I put a golf ball in a vice, but not too tight, or it gets too squished.
2. I drilled a hole most of the way through the golf ball with a 1-inch spade drill bit.
3. I cut some of the rubber off the handle of the digger. You should cut off a little more than I did in the photo.
4. I pushed the golf ball onto the handle of the digger. The golf ball is stretchy, so it grips the handle well.

No it looks a little funny, but it's much more comfortable to dig with.

What happened to all the rubber band that was in golf balls back in the 1960s?
Are they all plastic now days?

NICE FIX!

I used a little epoxy and put a chrome cap in the end. It just plugs into the hole in the handle, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn't fall out from repeated pressing on it.

cheap fix...

similar to the following.....just had to find the right size for the hole.

I like Turak's plug button idea. Garrett, can you put these in the handles of you diggers? Maybe under the rubber? Then I wouldn't have to use a goofy-looking golf ball!
