I wonder if Garrett's will finally dump the belltone if they go down the modulated tone style of sounds as

the belltone is the exact opposite of it. It's without doubt the worst single tone of any detector on the market and denies the user of any useful tonal information. It's important to be able to hear what is going on with a tone as you go over a target. While visual information puts you in the ball park of what might be there, it's how a tone sounds, that tells the real story of what is there. There is no way that the belltone can ever give you that info as it totally smothers the tone, denying almost all useful information.
Very much a "what were you thinking" choice of sound when it was chosen. Very cheesy. I see that the AT Pro still has it with the same consequences.

I really like the bell tone for coin shooting and I do a lot of it. I think I can turn it off on my 2500 but I wouldn't even consider it. (I always skip right over that setting when in the settings menu.) You are right, though. It provides very little information.

I don't know, I guess I've not been in the hobby, or experienced enough with other options or the electronics of a MD to understand. To me, a "dedicated" tone (bell tone in this case) is better than a graduated type tone, but mostly because my hearing isn't able to detect small changes in pitch/tone, whereas a totally different signal is easy to notice.

I'm with you BusDigger. I mostly coin hunt and can't wait to get a good repeatable belltone! with size "B" showing in pinpoint on my GTI1500 or coin size sweep in pinpoint with my ACE250

I absolutely LOVE the belltone feature. I have been using my brother's teknetics gamma 6000 (until I get my Garrett Gtax 550 back), and I really miss the belltone. After learning the 550, I found that there are subtle changes in the belltone that add to the information I was receiving. For example, the belltone sounds different on a silver quarter compared to the belltone on an aluminum can.

Mick,
The AT Pro with it's Pro Audio mode will place the machine into a modulated tone mode. This for me is one of the best things about this new machine. But others have the option not to use it. I personally couldn't make out any round tones or the ramp up and down tone on targets with the 250. Now with the AT Pro I will be able to. As far as the belltone goes. Well at first I didn't like it on the 250. But I grew to like it. I really wonder if the AT Pro will even use it when in the Pro Audio Mode? I wish the manual would get posted so we could find out. But this won't keep me from buying one.

Johnny Cache you are the first person that I heard that has the gtax550, I have one myself it was my first detector that I bought. Really enjoy hearing the belltone when it detects a coin...
also own the GTI 2500... and a Minelab SE PRO which uses multiple tones which took me time to learn the different targets...

that familiar Ding Ding Ding Ding after the the camera went off the face plate of the Pro, in the video sur did a remarkable immitation of an AT Pro bell tone.

I didnt hear the belltone in the video...I watched it many times. Ill do it again just to make sure...but if it had the belltone...I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!

Your Aussie coins dont do the belltone much so you might as well just turn it off and just leave bi-level ON.

Yeah.
I operate the GTI with it turned off. I hardly use the Ace these days because of the bell tone. I have to rely on the pinpoint to tell me what is under the coil. Ther catch is, that I find that the bell tone assaults your ears so much that I start walking over good targets due to ear fatigue (regardless of volume) It's a shame, because I really like the Ace apart from that.
The tone that I'm talking about, is just after you see the chap go over the targets. The camera is not on the detector at the time of the bell tones, and they sound more refined than the bell tone that you get on the Ace (higher pitched too.) but a bell tone none the less. If going into the modulated tone drops the bell tone, then that would be sweet indeed!
Mick Evans.
