I was Nullified Today

I hunted a Naval base that originated in the 1850's today, that's been recently decommissioned. I started in the yard of a Victorian era officers house (mansion is more like it, I should be so lucky) that their working on, and the Sov was null'd out more often then not. I was using the 8" Coinsearch coil, and going really slow, but I was really surprised at how much it null'd.

If there was a coin on top of iron, or next to say a nail, will the null override the coin tone ?

Maybe hunted a site with a friend a couple of weeks ago he was using the Sov same thing I wasn't doing any better with my Troy X5 plan on going back in a couple of weeks with my Compass 77B that I should have taken the first time. Dan

Only coil worth using when that happens, is the coiltec joey.
I hunt in England Uk, and ended up buying a differant detector bcause it was that bad

in a very trashy site is super slow coil swinging, your other best bet is to have a 5'' coil.

The Sov can hit on coins when they are in quite a bit of iron trash, but it is going to depend a lot on just how strong the coin is compared to the iron.
Sometimes the signals will average to something lower than the coin, and you will get a lower tone than normal. You may find a particular angle at which you get a better or worse tone because of the different orientation of the objects in relation to each other and the coil as you work around the target.

You should dig just about anything that you don't identify as known trash signals at a place like that. Don't stick with just coin tones.

Use your smallest coil, work slow, and turn your sensitivity down as far as you need to to keep a threshold half the time or more.

One other thing...
Iron is highly permeable......it captures lines of magnetic flux and causes severe distortion of both the transmitted and recieved coil signals. This can really throw off your pinpointing, so don't think that the first nail that you pull out of the hole was your target. The real target can easily be 2 or 3 inches to one side, so keep checking it as you dig.

Definitely sounds like a Joey or the Sunray 5" coil would be helpful.

I was digging everything that wasn't iron (and got a few pieces of iron anyhow), most of it ended up being alloy roofing nails, and misc. aluminum alloy or similar building materials. I did find a little dirt dump, that had a whole bunch of stepping stones piled up next to it, and when I started poking around the dirt dump, I found a few square nails, and some old round copper thingy (not a coin just a round piece of copper, looks like the foot of a cane or such). I'll be going back to the dirt dump with my shovel, that could be a winner. I also brought my Fisher Coinstrike with me, and it did OK with some clad stuff down into the 60's, but all in all I didn't find anything great.... yet, I'll be back :detecting:

I hunted a Victorian era hotel grounds today (no great finds, but it was fun) and hunted an area that was where they dumped all the remains of the first hotel that burnt down, as well as dumped trash. It's loaded with Victorian period broken bottles, china, etc., and I expected to have the same nulling issue, but last night I read a thread were someone said they cranked up the threshold in a similar situation and it really cut down on the nulling. It worked like a charm, not only did it cut down on the nulling (tremendously) I was also able to swing faster. I hit some deep targets, but not coins, just fragments of relics.

Anyone try that 5" EXcelerator from Kellyco ? I thought I'd read it was a concentric coil, but a quick check on the Kellyco site shows that only the 8" Sovereign EXcelerator coil is a concentric.

When I return to the Naval base, I'll try the threshold trick again on the same site to see how it works. Someone also posted they were working a iron laden site they didn't have good luck with using the Sovereign at before, and they thought to raise the coil ~ 4" above ground, and they started finding coins like crazy as it was reading above the iron.

never heard of that technique before. But wouldn't it masked out smaller or deeper targets?Suppose its worth a try ,I do have some iron infested sites.Anybody else have thoughts on cranking up the threshold?
