I went to an old park the other day, to detect, the park was built in the late 1800's there are some old buildings and areas that aren't
used that much anymore. this year in my area you can't detect anymore in the campgrounds or picnic areas, if the
state runs them. I am trying to find out the reason, and trying to see if I can do anything about it, anyway about the park, someone was there before me, and lift holes all over the place, I try ed to fill as many as I could, there were just to many, It is no wonder were losing places to detect, I have a feeling that is why they closed the camp grounds and picnic area's, anyway if you know anyone that is just starting out, become there friend and and show them all the proper ways, thanks .....1230@$tree

I second that also I have seen a few unfilled holes in one of the parks I hunt also and I tried to fill them in don't want to lose my parks . It takes less time to fill your hole in than it does to dig it and if your neat to start with its not a problem .

Well, I've "ranted" about this in the past till I'm "blue in the face".---All I'm going to ad to it (this time) is: If we don"t ALL fill our holes AND leave the place looking like it was (or better) than when we got there---we are ALL going to be out of business!!------FACT!!!!!!

I'm with you Harold. It takes so little time to follow through and be considerate of all. Maybe I just take a slower more methodical approach than some but I just don't understand why anyone would be so impatient and in a hurry. It's not like you're going to speed up your clad retrieval to the point of getting rich. Just lazy I guess. Bottom line, if you dig a hole, dig it properly and fill it. Every time. No excuses. Personally I'm not satisfied until any hole I dig is filled and "invisible". Thanks for the podium. That's all.

I wish the only place that was allowed to sale detectors was an actual dealer or a place of business that was qualified to instruct new buyers of the proper techniques of how to metal detect.
That's why I never show my finds to anyone at the parks not that I wouldn't love to invite new people to the hobby but afraid they'll run to wallyworld and buy the el-cheap-o and then run to all the parks leaving holes all over and ruin it for everyone.
I try to get people into this hobby but only ones that I am around a lot because I know if they do I'll be around to show them the proper way to look like they never was there.
I would love for there to be a club in this area that way I could invite ones interested to a meeting but nearest one from here is Memphis and that's like 80 miles so to far for me or anyone around here to drive to go to meetings.

I'm with you on thinking it's the "Wally World" and used detector market that helps to set this digging problem up. Awhile back, some "detectorist" did the park across from where I live. Was doing a night hunt and kept kicking things with my feet? All were plugs with the trash and zincolns laying beside! My daughter and I got up the next morning early, to at least clean it up the best we could. Ignorance...ya.....stupid is stupid. Difference is......an unknowledgeable person would have left a ratty hole. Stupid and uncaring does that kind of stuff.

Wouldn't it be great if they came out with a pinpointer/taser combo unit!

I am in total agreement with the others.... the area should be left in the same condition or better than when we found it... I personally don't dig anything.... I have learned to probe with a small skinny seven inch screwdriver with a blunt tip and then to remove the item with an eight inch flat blade screwdriver with a small hook on the end... It works great, leaves a tiny hole in the soil and can be mastered with very little practice. I believe it's the way to go ...especially in sensitive areas such as nice grassy parks, ball Fields, golf courses, soccer fields and anywhere that will be visited by others....Thanks for taking the time to straighten up the messes left by a few inconsiderate soles... Just my $2 worth.... :)

I use pretty much the same method. I use the skinny screwdriver to move the roots back leaving a hole with the coin at the bottom then just pop it to the surface. Quick and clean. I have had park personal watch me from a couple feet and be amazed how easy it is. Sod in a park is always moist and easy to move in parks.

People don't care about others, and who it might hurt.It crosses all boundaries.Your not going to stop em,digging and making a mess. They don't care to begin with,it not a matter of wether they use a radio shack special to the top of the line detector. They aren't about to listen to you.Its a sad fact of life this day and age,we have all seen it.Even if you do catch em,the first thing out of their mouth will be who are you to tell me what I can not do.:rage:

You're exactly right Woodchuck. It's at that point that you "show" them who you are. How you do that I'll leave up to you.

I do agree with you Woodchuck but the ones with 5 brain cells (rather than 4) might.....might take a little constructive peer pressure from a quality informative dealer and fellow detectorist. You can bet that a multi-product retailer (like Radio Shack or similar) doesn't even think to go there. I do have to say though...this problem was worse when I was a kid in the 70's and it really does feel good to discuss this problem. Good folks around here you guys!!

going to my local park and there were these big places all over the park. They were about the size of a dinner plate and several inches deep. They had been replaced but looked aweful. The hugh big clods had just been sat back on the spot and they just would not seed back into the ground. They were turning brown and just looked so terrible. The way they had been dug there was "nothing" I could do about it. Come to find out they were dug by a guy that was suppose to be tops in the hobby. He said that a Minelab would not pinpoint and that was the only way to dig a target. I was very upset at what he had left all over our park.

Do you have a name ? I know there's more than a few of us who would like to point out the flaw in his "logic" to him. Like they say "You can't teach stupid".

I have a question for larryk56. Are you referring to the Glen Beck that has a show on Fox News Network?
