I was a bit surprised by the Ace.

I decided to hunt with my Explorer more this year, so that's what I started to do. After digging up a large number of screw caps (far more than I'm used to) I asked for help on the Explorer forum from other Aussie detectorists with it's dicrimination. It turns out, that I had the machine configured at it's best for sorting out our $1 and $2 coins from screw caps (as these coins are right in the middle of them)! Despite the fact that it has nearly a 1000 possible combinations, a fair amount of screw caps locked in in exactly the same location as these coins. As it has a DD coil, there was no other feed back apart from audio, which sort these targets out.
So of the 4 screw caps that I had from the last hunt, which I missed when I threw my rubbish finds out, all 4 completly fooled the Explorer both in discrimination and audio signiture, I pulled out the Ace and tested them again. The Ace told me strait up, that 3 of them were not coins!:yikes: They bounced around on the metre. It would be interesting to have heard these targets in the ground with the Ace. I bet they would have had a tell tale fade. Little wonder I was getting annoyed with the Explorer. Sometimes a top end machine, is not always best.
Thought I'd throw in a picture of what I found with the Ace in the first 12 months. ($852) I took the picture before Christmas. Only a few more days to go and I can post the finds of the Sydney trip.

Man, you Aussie fellas sure know how to DIG. Is that why they called your soldiers "Diggers"?

(I'd rather be diggin' coins than diggin' trenches, for sure.)

That's an impressive heap o' coins, there! Bravo! The Yeller Feller packs some thunder Down Under!

PS- I sure wish we in the US had dollar (and $2.00!) coins that actually circulated!

It would sure make digging the modern stuff more profitable.

It reads most of our coins as metal (nulls) and just doesn't pick them up. You easily lose $300.00 worth of one and two dollar coins a year and that isn't good. :(

They need to do like in :canadaflag: and get rid of the $1 bill. That would force people in the :usaflag: to use......and lose the $1 coins. Greedy......heck ya, that's just one reason I :detecting: Oh and BTW, Great pile Mick.

I think that the term "Digger" may have actually derived from the gold fields from the 1850's on till the 1880's.As our own army was formed not long after the gold rush era, then it would have been a popular term at the time.
With the US elections on at the end of the year, maybe you can form your own pressure group and tell your candidate some of the benefits of switching from paper money, back to coins! ie they last a lot longer. After all, it's a bit hard to coin a new praise if you've got no coins!
Sorry. Couldn't help myself there.

No I haven't Rob. The detecting club I belong to, does mostly gold hunting only 70kms down the road most times; so who knows, maybe at some point I'll give it a bit of a go just for laughs. It's not the Aces strong suite though.
