I Want to tell you about a old house I detected. (long)

Several yrs ago I tracked down the owner of a very old house ,that was 3 miles from where I live. No one was living there and he said go for it..Very big yard, fresh mowed and grass really low ,not thick ,and didnt seem to grow well there. Thats a great thing.
B4 I even start I must say this is the best place I ever found but one other place was close.(will tell that story maybe another time) . I have no pics ,sry. Have no way to take any.
I detected this place for 2 summers. I was there alot. After wrk and the weekends. But I recall the first time well. First good coin was a worn thin ,no date, barber quarter. Dug some other things ,then next to one of the big oaks in the yard got a iffy signal deep. ID was jumping around. dug down 7-8 inches and found a 1851 large cent. I was stoked to say the least. buried the hole and went back over it wt coil. Got a terrible signal in about the same place that would only come in wt low tone and not every pass. Well I had to dig it. 1832 (or so) hard times token. Bout fell over ,I hadnt been there an hour. Recall finding one more good coin ,a mercury dime. Then I had to leave (girlfriend thing) as much as I did not want to. I cant tell about each coin I found and you will see why but I was back the next day and then for that summer (often )and the next summer.
I started digging everything that gave a signal. Dug a ton of trash and clad which I did not keep track of .But I did keep a list of my finds for this place. Here It is:
1 walking liberty half .
9 mercs.
6 buffalo nicks.
156 wheats.
2 barber quarters.
1 1804 half penny.
1 hard times token.
1 1851 large cent.
6 indian head pennies.
3 silver roosevelt dimes.
2 silver washinton quarters.
I may have forgot to write a few on the list also. LOL
The 1804 is by far my oldest. The soil in this place was very kind on the coins and I could just see the date and details on that coin. One indian penny 1867 in EF worth $160.00. Not many come out in EF.
When I left this place it was hard to find a signal in any part of the yard. I still did not want to quit but someone bought the place. I drive by it all the time wanting to go back.

If it makes a noise - Dig it! Good Luck

Greetings, flash5153!
Love these stories, yours is "inspirational", maybe even "confounding" to us newbies with comparably inferior equipment. Ah, but the dream lives on and shall never die! GRRRRRReat finds!

I live in Michigan. I use the pioneer 202 and mostly the discovery 2200.I know these machines well. I think there are places like this everywhere. I was 4 years driving around looking 4 these houses wt rock foundations and stopping ,trying to get permission. Its alot of work and a little dangerous. I got turned down most of the time but not all the time. Found some great coins this way.
There is nothing like detecting a yard of a very old house. Try it and you will see what I mean.

Good luck

My cousin lives in Springfield OR and a month or so ago, right after I got my BH, I spent about 10 min scanning along his front sidewalk. His house was built in the 1890s but has been remodeled many times since then. He has about 3 acres, so I think that I could spend much time searching and finding interesting artifacts.

Thanks,

Mark
