I used another Explorer and noticed this difference in deep targets

A buddy let me use his XS with X1 probe and we were at an old school site where we have dug about a dozen indian head pennies all at 8-10 inches.
The difference between my XS and his was on his the deep targets on his were sounding much softer and clearer than mine. While mine goes just as deep my deep hits tend to crack and break somewhat like iron but still repeat and I would still dig them. The Visual ID on digital readouts are still the same though.
The only thing I can think of is that I have my gain set at 7 and when I put in my settings on his I think I left the gain at 6. Could this be my problem. He has since sold his XS and now I can't compare again.
By the way he has an XSII so he didn't give up on Exploring, just updated <img src="/metal/html/glasses.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":geek:">
Would it be advisable to bump my gain back down to 6 or will I be missing some deep targets by doing this. I have excellent hearing (better than 20-20) since I don't know what terms to put it in other than this so do I need this extra gain or not?
Thanks ahead of time for any input, HH Greg
