Jeff, I don't know where or what beach you were hunting on but it can be a challenge. Keep in mind that on the western shores of the thumb area the sand blows up and inland of the beaches all winter. One of the first things they do in the spring is to clear off all of the parking lots and other flat areas and haul the sand back on to the beaches. That covers up much of any dropped items.
I have had my best luck around concession stands that sell food and beach supplies. Public bath areas are also good. Over all, my best was in the shallow water and wet sand.
I have made up a floating screen that I tie to my belt. When I detect a target I scoop up the sand and drop it into the screen. Then detect the hole again. Target still there, scoop more. Target gone, go on to the next one. I don't even waste my time going through each scoop. When the screen starts to load up with junk - shells stones, etc I go to the shore and pick through the stuff looking for my finds.
After I have visually picked everything out I dump it on the sand and go over it again with the MXT. I can guarantee you will find stuff that you missed.
Just be careful not to get the control box wet. That is the advantage of using the screen. One hand on the detector, the other works the scoop.
