I took my GT outside yesterday

gear box

I just played around a bit and didn't take my digger as the ground is hard as cement yet. Most of the snow is gone so what the heck give it a try. I did verify some thing's that you guy's have said and what I have read in the manual and some book's that I have. I only used the quick start setting's that are in the manual. I went out in the front yard and got some hit's one of which was pretty big sounding so I raised the coil up a few inches and still got a signal, I raised it up about a foot and a half and it still sounded off. JUNK! Further on a I got a nice hit that to me sounded coin sized it wasn't big but a nice compact signal. I raised the coil again but this time the signal went away at 7 or 8 inches. I tried sweeping pretty fast over the target just like the sweep speed of my XLT and sure enough the GT nulled out over the target, slowed down and it was there again. All the while the machine stayed very stable and the threshold was alway's a nice steady buzz. This machine just boosted my enthusiasem by 1000% and I am confident of finding some good stuff as soon as the ground thaw's out. I used the 8" coinsearch coil.
Good hunting, Gary

Very good! You are learning already without even digging.

Once things thaw out the best thing to do is to spend some time playing with every target before you dig it up. Try different sweep speed and width of sweep and LISTEN to the sound in relation to the motion. THEN you dig it up to see what it is and how deep it was.

Pay attention and don't XLT it just looking for a beep and an ID number. Forget the XLT and learn how a Sov talks. You will do well.
