I thought WE were nuts!

Until I ran into two guys suiting up to go SPEARFISHING this morning...not spearing fish through the ice out of a nice warm shanty, smoking, drinking brandy and jigging a decoy like one normally does up here, but actually scuba diving for them! :surprised: I wished I had taken their picture, but I was too shy since they were obviously more manly than me! Anyway, heres some shots from this am, one thing ytcoinshooter has recently talked about, you get these Pros in the trash, drop sens, (i was 5 clicks from top dead center), and just creep, you can get ten targets before you take another step. Scoop comes up with nails and glass and all sorts of scrap along with the target! I got a wheat penny and just this clad and junk..4 nickels as I was gold shootin' .the big ball chain is either brass or copper, but it sounded like a big gold one would. We had a fisherman get washed off the pier Tuesday, they found him dead washed up on the shore all bundled up in his carharrts...dont take long in water this cold.

Mud you must have been bundled up like the little kid brother in Christmas Story. Those guys with the spear-guns could have shot your eye out.:)

I thought I was nuts. I hit an old park after the temp moved up from 17 to 24 while up in Nashville for the holiday. Fortunately, a bunch of clad digging helped keep my brain from freezing. Although my wife and son said it was frozen before I left the house. I gotta salute you my man. You are a true blue swinger. My hats off to you. HH jim tn

This weather is actually perfect for hunting...overcast, cold/cool, no people or bugs, some snow to wet the whistle every now and then...see how long this coastline is? A guy runs up and down looking for a cut. The place where I took that pic sometimes is blown out right up to the dunegrass, and then the next day theres 6' of sand overburden pushed back in..heading out right now!

Nuts, sure but I understand the drive. There is something extreme and yet appealing about hunting in those conditions. Man's adaptation to his environment has led to many triumphs. I have a friend who uses a dry suit in the winter and his consistent harvest of gold & platinumn jewelry makes the expense justafied. Is that the St. Lawerence river / seaway pictured there?
Congrats on coming home without incident!

Great photos and story, Mud! Amazing that the shoreline changes so dramatically. There's a real beauty to that wintry beach, too. Just don't take that 'true blue' comment too literally, heh.

Mud, I don't know you well enough to besmirch your character, but I cheerfully admit to being crazy. Helps me to sleep at night. On the other hand I never deny the possibility that there are others out crazier. Keep hunting as long as you can (but please do it safely, I like reading your posts) Artie

My experience has shown me that extreme cold runs my
batteries down mighty quick. How do you get around that
problem. I've been using a small hand warmer in the the battery
pack with a piece of wool wrapped around it. Seems to work
Ok. But in the photo of yours I don't see any kind of protection.

You got to hit it when you have the opportunity. As long as you exercise caution, winter and early spring are my favorite water hunting times. Glad you got out, Mud. I'm starting my 7th week without my detecting fix, but I hope to get wet this week and it's not nearly as cold down south.
