Hi everyone, I took my new excal ll out for the second time this past Sunday. I will say this, water detecting is a completely new ball game. Just getting pinpointed in on a target is strange. I'm used to using my DFX and everything is much easier. The tone on the excal for different types of metal all sound the same to me.

At one point I could have sworn I saw a Chinese man swim up out of one of my holes. When pin pointing the tone would get very loud and I just knew i was going to get it in the next scoop. On one of my holes I just stopped using the scoop and started just washing the sand out by kicking my foot. I did finally get the goods though.Well that's if you call a burnt coke/beer can goods. I took a dime, quarter, pull tab, and a 925 ring (that I found with my DFX earlier in the wet sand) and laid them out just so I could see the different tone from my excal.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but they all sound like a mad bee flew into my ear. I'm getting better with the long handle scoop though. I was able to retrieve several pull tabs and other junk. The best part of the whole was returning home with that silver ring. My wife's friend (who had laughed at and called me a dork) was there and asked if she could have the ring. I told her "sure I'll toss it out in the yard and you rent my detector to find it" Needless to say I still have the ring.

I agree with you that the dimes and quarters sound the same. Pulltabs usually have a slightly lower tone than the coins. Next time you are out try a nickel you should notice that it's tone is considerable lower than that of the dime and quarter. Most gold rings give a low tone close to that of a nickel. Pinpointing will get easier with time. It takes a little practice to get used to going from a Concentric like you the one on your WHites to the DD coil on the Excalibur.

Dig...do pull tabs sound different than dimes and quarters ?They should sound lower in tone.

If not, then you may be in pin point mode. That is an all metal mode that has 1 tone.

I laid out my wedding band 14k, that same 925 ring, a dime, a fresh pull tab and one of those blobs of burnt aluminum. I only played for a little while but could hear the difference between them. The wed band and pull tab where pretty close to the same tone. They more of a dull tone as apposed to the 925 ring and blob of aluminum which were a higher pitched tone.

That was on dry land in the back yard so there wasn't high wind noises and they were all at the same depth. It's going to take some time to get used to the difference between the a large blob of junk 18" down and the silver 8" down. It took me awhile to learn that with the DFX, but the difference is I can't see what I'm doing with the excal.

Dig it all anyway....even after you think you know what it is, some finds will still suprise you.

I have only had my Excal out in the lake once, and everything sounded the same... very low tones... and I too saw that same guy from China swimming by.... He said to tell you Hi and keep digging...

harder to distinguish the different tones with the Excalibur is the headphones. The waterproof headphones don't have the frequency response of a good set of non-waterproof headphones. But after while you will get better at it, Still the best idea is to dig everything that doesn't cause the threshold to null. Some people have posted that the null could be a very deep thin gold ring but every null I have ever dug has turned out to be a piece of iron so I no longer waste my time digging any signals that null. But I would suggest digging a few null signals just to prove it to yourself.

I usually have the threshold down to where i can barley hear it and then just a tad more. Are you saying i should have it to where i can hear it drop off?

I keep it to where you just cant hear it. If you find a ring or something worthwhile it will sing for you. It will also allow you to find very small thin chains that way...at least it seems to have worked that way for me.

Thats what I've been doing, Siesta Key beach has to be the cleanest beach around now. The park people have to empty the trash cans twice as much as they use to, now that I got my Excal. :)
