I think my AT Pro might need service....already???

I have had my AT Pro for about almost 2 months now and recently it has started acting odd. I seemed to work ok and I took it in Lake Michigan about 2 weeks ago...worked ok, no leaks...found some clad, minimal falsing. I went down to the beach again with it earlier this week and that's when I noticed that at the waters edge the detector was just going crazy, falsing. I seen that it was down to 2 battery bars so when I got home I replaced the batteries, and yes I put them in correctly, they are not in backwards. Yesterday evening I went back down to Lake Michigan again and waded out to the depth that the screen was still visible, ground balanced it, and started working. It started the falsing once again...and it seems that whatever is going on...it keeps jumping back to 53 on the VDI. Yaaa...I wish that was accurate...I have tested gold rings and that's what they read. So I'm getting all this falsing, I can not seem to get a repeatable signal....and the pin-pointer just waivers up and down if I try and pin-point. Yet...if I hold the pin-point button down and its on the sandy bottom...nothing....I start to lift it up off the lake bed and once about 1 foot off the sandy bottom...the reading goes to full and the unit is screaming!! I tried shallower water with no luck...same response. I got home and tried it out in my yard....not as much falsing but still not acting correct...and it keeps jumping to VDI 53. I'm pretty disappointed at this point...it either needs service already...or is just gonna be an unreliable detector.

This may be a stupid ? but do you ground balance?

Yes...I ground balance it in the water and work parallel to the shore....occasionally re-balancing. Also re-balance when I change water depths. I'm have also tried it in every mode with and without discrimination.

maybe, maybe not...the black sand we have at the waters edge and waves causes my other brand detector (F70) to spaz a little. I usually ignore it, since it will still signal a valid target through that mess.
Can you lower your sens a little? or GB like Way suggested? Man, its tough to figure out sometimes, like cell phone interference, or even electricity in the air from a storm.
Good luck,
Mud

OK.....then Garrett is your next call. I had the same thing happen. Sent it in and got a brnd new one back in a week and a half....and i live in WI. which is 4 dys shipping time to and from. I had the same thing...pin point went out first and then the next day...totally woulnd turn on. You must have a leak

Yaa...I guess I will give Garrett a call and see if they have some advice or if they want to see the unit. Its always possible it could have a leak because I have submerged it...waist deep water. I know that I was out there last night and the sun was shining....no power lines for at least a block and I went out on the our North side beach...which was sheltered from the wind and so the waves were very, very small. Waist deep all the way to the waters edge it acted the same. I did try turning the sensitivity up and down...if it was not at full sensitivity it was dead silent...zero discrimination....and I know there has to be some trash out there. I gave it a good hour and then called it for the night.

So how does your new replacement act? Have you had it in Lk Michigan...does this detector not like Fresh water and waves?

Well I just talked with Garrett and they told me to go ahead and send it in and they will check it out for me. Some advice she did tell me is that the factory set (default) sensitivity is were it should in most cases be set...that running it all the way up is asking for more falsing. I was assured though that it really should not act like that in Fresh water, that it is really a stable detector....so maybe there is an issue with my unit. I'm not happy that I'm gonna have to part with it for awhile but look forward to getting it back with a clean bill of health.
