I think I forgot how to use my detectors...

I have been on such a bad luck streak lately and its getting worse. Now I hardly even find pennies. Six hours yesterday and five hours today. Two detectors- Sovereign GT w/ 10" Tornado and DFX with 13" Detech Ultimate. Ive had these machines for three years and even tho I'm still learning Ive done well in the past with both. Yesterday and today I pummled the four dirt piles delivered and spread out for me by a local landscaper. I found one 1998 zinc. Also found this Pepsi bottle. Maybe someone here can date the bottle and reference the age of my dirt piles. Sorry...very frustrated. Good luck everyone and HH. Matt

Hey Matt. don't get frustrated just switch area's. Find a old park and go low and slow even if you can only hunt a couple of hour's. Those two hour's are usually the most productive you're relaxed and focused, that's when i find my best stuff.
Good luck Gary

By the way matt, I don't know or I can't remember how old your Pepsi bottle is but it reminded me of a story about a coke bottle. I was stationed at Guantanamow Bay Cuba in 1972 and because I was naughty, I had to clean ditches for punishment. I found a Coke Bottle embossed on the bottom from Havana Cuba. I sure wish I had that today.
Good luck Gary

sometimes very dry soil seems lessen the ability of the unit to see the targets....a good rain might make a difference...

We all have our slow times detecting Matt--just not everyone will admit it.---There's been a few hunts when I was happy to find a few zinc pennies.-----In those few times when it gets like that, I just think----well, it's gotta get better, it can't get much worse.----And it always does get better--somtimes with a very special find breaking a dry spell.------Hang in there!--------Del

Thanks everyone. I took the day off from detecting yesterday and now today I'm ready to try again. Hard to believe no coins in these piles right now. When I found that gold plated ring it was the only find in the whole pile. I'm going to keep at it. Every day is a new day. Good luck to everyone and HH. Matt

The thing about dirt piles is that they are basically a crap shoot. You know there may be coins there, but you can't be certain exactly where because it has been moved. And depending on the site they were removed from, the good stuff may all be in one area and nowhere else, or spread out evenly like we would hope. If you continue to bomb on the piles I would move on. Find a park or old home and seek permission. The law of averages is working in your favor if you are doing a lot of digging. Eventually you will be rewarded. But don't keep trying to ride that dead horse if it's going to get you nowhere ..

To steal a saying from my fishing days " A bad day metal detecting is still better than a good day at work" Karma comes around to those keep plugging. Artie

Good advice McDave- thank you. Artie, I agree with you and I am waiting for some Karma to catch up with me. Im going to try today (Sat) because I haven't been out for the past two days. I'm going to leave the dog at home because of the heat. HH. Matt

No luck 2.5 hours Sat morning at my number 2 spot...the place I have found very shallow silver because the ground is so compacted. Went back to my piles. Nothing. Ended up hitting the dirt parking lot for the baseball fields. I put my detector in factory coin/jewelry mode (lame) and at least found a pocket full of clad. I'll take it. Good luck everyone and HH. Matt
