I was out at a favorite spot today. I had managed to get two Wheat's, a '56 and '56D. After a little while, I got one of those signals that I always like to investigate. It was deep, at an indicated 6". It was bouncing between Iron and Zinc Cent. I milked the target for a minute, paying close attention to the meter, but whenever it bounced high, it locked onto Zinc. Now my pulse gets pounding, as I've pulled an IH penny out of this spot 18 months ago, and that's exactly what I was thinking I had. I cut a large plug, flipped it over, and scanned the plug. Nothing. I laid down my towel and started removing all the loose dirt from the bottom of the hole, scanning each handful. Still no target. I pried the dirt up from the bottom of the hole, and started scanning that. The last handful sounded off loud and proud through my headphones. I checked the meter again, and it was locked on Zinc. I had a wide grin on my face as I opened my hand, looking for an IH penny. I broke the clod in half and scanned one of the halves. Nothing. I broke the remaining clod in half and scanned part, nothing. I broke the little bit left in half and looked at it, saw something I NEVER expected! A 3-ring bullet! OMG! Here it is, with the dirt brushed off:
