I think I am getting the hang of this thing....

Took my new to me Excal to another old swimming beach this morning. This is another spot that is hammered to death every season by a million guys, but still holds a lot of nice finds at the harder to reach depths. In fact, I like to hunt this place only in early winter and early spring (right before and after the freeze) as all the easy stuff will be gone and then it's just me and the old goodies....

Left the 1280X at home today as I didn't want to be tempted :)

Got there and hunted 20 minutes or so with not a single signal. Same settings as last week, although I experimented with the sensitivity.

I then decided to try all metal, after being inspired by what I think is OldBeechNut's uTube vid. All I can say is whooo hooo - I think I'm on to something !!

Hunting this place in all metal, I lost no signals. I hit some deeeeeep targets. This machine impressed me today. I think I'll be selling the 1280. After 20 years with that machine, this is quite a statement.

Here's what I got today, including a couple silver dimes, a heavy silver ring, a 10K initial ring and a couple buffalo nickels. Not a clad coin or memorial penny in the lot.

Of course, I dug a lot of nails, bobby pins and rusty crap. However, a lot of this I could tell was junk before I recovered it. Until I get a lot more time with the Excal, I'l keep digging it.

Take care and good hunting.

i still cant get a handle on my excal.please send in the help im on the south shore of long island near jones beach -what should my setting be

excal 1 with 10in coil when im on the wet sand- i set thresh down- volume up all the way - disc on 1 - sens on auto -------then i dig everything--- lol sometimes the silence is deafening now i love the hobby but sometimes it can be frustrating-i have gotten my twin brother into it as well. i even went out and bought another machine--dfx 300- so we each have a good one to use i know it is a learning process. i have spoken with the local guys who have said that it has been pretty quiet on the beach or is it just us? i bought the excal from kellyco and the second one at a local dealer -who has been very helpful with all my questions- even questions about excal yet i still need more advice hope you can give a fellow treasure hunter a hand i promise i wont hit your beach lol-as if that would scare you

Lets go down the conrol housing, try this.....Disc, Threshold barely audible, Volume wide open, Sensitivity on about 12 (pointing toward the coil, savvy) and Discrimination on 1. Don't use AUTO anymore, bad form. Low and slow on the sweep, about 1' per second and dig it ALL. See if your #'s don't come right on up, from what you are used to. I'll be lookin' forward to a full report.

hey gulf hunter thanks for the quick response on the excal- went to the storeroom/closet and set all the controls I am rubbing my hands in anticipation.don't know if I will tell my brother about your advice(just kidding he,s my twin after all -anyone else would be on there own -lol - cant hit the beach till the weekend though looking forward to it - now whats your position on the dfx any help with that ----I know it is supposed to be more automatic but I guess I am not the sharpest tool in the shed or so my wife keeps telling me --anyway thanks in advance I hope I dont let you down or me for that matter Ipromise a full report next week

Postaldigger, you should be on the right track using those settings. There should be a MARKED increase in performance, from what you had previously. These are not necessarily the b-all/end-all either, there are other ways to run, that DO work. Be sure to get the copies of cjc's latest 2 copies of Excal publications too, as they go into MUCH greater detail, than I could put into a thread. Now I only comment on things I know something about and no nothing about the DFX. You will need to counsil someone smarter than me on that one, keep us posted mate.
