I tested my new Explorer SE today and...

As some of you know my other SE was falsing like crazy on iron, to the point of being nearly unusable. Minelab sent me a new SE this week and I took it out this morning to a site that is loaded with a LOT of iron to test it.

I know some guys are saying this SE is more sensitive and you got to throttle back the sens and gain. When I tried that with the old SE I lost depth and while there was some improvement it was still considerably ill behaved compared to my XS.

So I programmed the new SE with my normal settings, Gain 7, Sens 26 manual, Deep ON, etc. Same settings I'm running at this site with my XS. I could tell in the first 20 feet or so that this new machine was vastly improved over the old SE.

I hunted for three hours with these settings, the new SE performed as well or better than my XS. There was virtually no high falsing on iron, certainly no more than I typically experience with my XS. It was night and day improved over the original SE.

This site has been well hunted but I managed to dig 2 mercs and 1 IH. One of the mercs and the IH were fairly deep. The merc was at least 8 inches down, under several inches of sod and then under this big rock about the size of two baked potatoes. Still it gave a good repeatable signal from most angles.

The few high iron falses I did happen across gave a low iron tone when swepth from 90 degrees unlike the old SE which would keep giving me high iron false tones from multiple angles.

Bottom line, the new SE runs like a champ and I didn't have to lower any of my normal settings!

I have heard of them coming out of the factory faulty but who knows may have been damaged internally via shipping as packages take a beating during shipping whether it be to the dealer or the consumer. Glad its working well and doesn't have a faulty operator as many stuggle to master an Explorer..I think a quick fix is to have an experienced clubmember try it out and easy to do in my area as its Explorer country with many owning same..
Years ago bought a new XLT as my partner excelled with one and I struggled even with his settings, to make a long story short we both new quickly when we trade units that I had a faulty machine and the Co. tech's sent it back working like it should...
Lot to be said for dealing with your local dealer for service after the sale...

Good to hear that the SE is running smooth for you and look forward to your next postings of finds. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

My SE works great except for the iron false signals. One of the big reasons I forked out the bucks for this machine was because it "Handles Iron Better". Someone else said this but it happens with my machine too: Get a nice repeatable high coin signal (conductive sounds) turn 90

where they had a port that you could just plug into a computer to get a diagnosic check with problem codes. The technology is there. There are high end paintball guns in my store that have that capability, plug it right into your own PC. Maybe someday.

Just a question on your settings.
Do you have the variability set to 10? Your nails should be easier to separate from coins. I dig some nails too.
On the new SE they preset the Gain to 8. I found that if you drop that to 6 or 7 you get a lot less falsing and your deeper targets sound deeper like with the old machines.
I'm sure you already knew this so HH

I have always used the variability at factory preset. I doubt I will change because of this. Yes, I think I can tell which signals are iron. It is just that my other Explorers did much better. I did bump the gain down to seven where I usually run. I have been using an explorer since about three months after the XS came out. To have one do what I described on an iron target is really a bummer for me (with any settings). My previous two Explorers would only give a good signal on iron from one direction, turn 90
