I switched back to manual and started finding silver again, today i found two mercs where i had gone over several times on several visits with SE set

Hunting in the "locked" or manual mode definitely makes a difference for me. I only use the "auto" mode for really bad or trashy ground.

That's a good decision on the Explorer line. I'm always hunting in man. sens., but not cranked. I feel my machine has better separation with sens. in the low-mid 20's, and I can still find silver dimes down to 9". We never really know what the true sens. is when we're in Auto, and that's a big problem. The E-Trac guys seem to be loving their Auto +3 mode. I saw a post on their forum praising it the other day. On the E, you can tell what the auto sens. is set to, which is a huge advantage.

there is a time and place for both...which I have shown myself over the last many months doing so much field testing of different coils.

If the coil...or site conditions allowed it...I went from semi auto 26 to as high as manual 26.

Then again...like Dan said...I found better results at manual 22 at times...just whatever works for each situation.

At some sites I did better in semi auto because of all the deep iron. I was able to better discern deep iron falsing from deep coins.

Other spots though...I went to manual 26 and did okay...still not diggging much iron.

The key to my settings working for me is to be able to tell the difference between deep iron falses and deep coin chirps,

The other key for me IMHO is EXACTLY what Dan said....to be able to get good separation along with good depth....and manual in the mid to low 20's seems to do that well for me if my site conditions allow me to use it.
