I stopped at an old roadside park the other day ............

and thought it would be a good place the find some silver. It was about an acre and had the old grills still there. They were small about two ft. high and there were 8 of them made of stone. The park is not used any more as it is a thing of the past. The road used to be the main road to town.

I didn't do well I think because they may have put some fill dirt in the old park. One part was yellow clay and another part was cinders and gravel. I pick up some very deep memorials. This is my question and it happens at quite a few places. When I dig the target, I lose the signal in the dirt clod. I'm talking about pennies not iron. Sometimes when I step on the dirt clod and break it up the signal comes back. Other times I locate it by using the pin point mode. How can I detect a cent 8" down with my F-70 and can't detect it on the surface?

Sometimes the matrix of copper is broken up when you remove it from the hole. Usually if I move to a different area and pinpoint and then go back over the clod of soil the target responds.Other times I have noticed a small piece of iron in the dirt and that causes the discrimination to knock out the target..along with the iron, or rusted dirt that's left after iron almost dissipates. As soon as dirt is moved so target responds first signal comes back.

I didn't think of that. The iron thing. I am most always MD'ing in iron infested areas. The pp always picks it up because it it is not being discriminated out. Thanks.

The coin may be at a differnt angle, once you take it out of the ground. More of an on edge position which is harder to detect. Just a guess on my part.

keep on diggin'

I have found the same thing occasionally happens with my F 75 and most other detectors I have owned. One or all of what jimmy and Elton said could be happening. Ground matrix disturbed, other small pieces of metal in the clod or, the coin could be slanted or on edge, When a target disappears for me, the first thing I do is break up the clod. If still no signal, I will then take a scoop or two more of dirt from the hole. Often the signal was still in the hole, probably going silent as the result of the disturbed ground. This usually occurs more often for me when the target is deep and when the coin is slanted or on edge. HH jim tn
