I Should Have Been Seated When I Uncovered This Coin!!!

Sorry I took so long getting this post up that SD was talking about for quality verses quantity. He defiantly beat me on the silver weight portion of the hunt but I like my find much better. It was my first coin of the hunt, I was hunting on top of a ridge over a creek that went out to the big lake when I got an iffy signal that I decided to dig, at first I thought I had a merc and it turned out to be a 1838 seated Liberty Dime, my oldest coin to date. I expected to find coins from the 50's and 60's because it use to be an old children's camp, but if you think about it, explorers, soldiers, fur trappers and you name have been up and down the shore line for years and someone probable came up that creek to maybe trap beaver, since there is still signs of beaver there even today. That was my only silver at that spot, we moved to a different camp and I found a 1944 merc., 1962D rosey and a squashed silver charm. The clad was found at both sights, found the religious medal at the second sight and the bullet necklace also. So all in all it was a good day for both me and SD. Went out today and only found some clad and a toy car that crumbled, SD did score a rosey.

Happy Hunting, Kevin

Very nice older seated, and worth some bucks, congratz there kc.

Nice dime Red book with large stars starts at $22 up to $350 /small stars $30 to $700.that should pay for a few tank fills

Rarely do you see a seated dime in that condition. The normal for them is to be very worn due to heavy circulation before being lost. You should be proud of that one! My oldest silver is an 1835 bust dime. You missed it being a bust by...what?...at the most 4 years. Not sure off hand when they switched from bust to seated on the dimes. By the looks of that coin it was dropped the year it was minted.

Interesting tidbit with hunting woods- I've dug a lot of silver in the woods over the years, and usually silver dimes (like barbers) are nicked at opposite sides of the coin at the edge, and just a little off in alignment to each other. What I suspect is that they were used as screwdrivers to adjust gun sights when out on a hunt. Anybody have any opinion on that?

I was shocked when he first told me he had a merc. LOL I was digging a wheat at the same time! Then he says no its a seated!! I had to go over and see for myself. And the condition, just WOW!!

Along a riverbank by lake Huron. A trapper, soldier or anybody surveying or whatever could have dropped it. I credit the condition with a few things. Absolutly nobody trampling over the ground where it was, it was in sand so no water stayed around it for long. Beautiful coin and a great find Kevin.

Thanks guys for the comments, Ive only found one other seated liberty dime a 1855cc and it was only good condition, so i am very happy with this one.

Correction on the 1855cc, it was a 1875cc seated liberty.

Congratulations! Wow that is a beautiful seated dime! You did very well for yourself on that hunting trip. For me, that is still on my list of "goodies" to find.

Sure are Tripple, I have found two underwater here.

Michigan became a state in 1836, had over 85 thousand people in 1834. Seated coins are from 1836 - 1891. So its even possible to find older than seated here!!

Good luck
