I had to take some shop garbage up to the dump yesterday. Now for those not too familiar with us up here... we have a community of maybe 350 people and all of us are pretty conscious of our garbage output. Thus, the dump is only open one afternoon a week. So when you go there, it is to get rid of a little garbage and to socialize with the neighbours. The fellow who runs the dumpis pretty cool; I have written about him before. He is the fellow who was walking on the beach up here and when he kicked a rock, he found a tin can full of very old silver coins.... halves, quarters, etc. Since I do detecting and arrowhead hunting, we havesome common interest and we get along pretty good.

Last week, someone brought in some junk to dispose of. There were boxes of the usual stuff, and he told the people where to put the metal, the wood, the plastic etc. Then the fellow went to take care of others who were arriving to get rid of their garbage. When things had calmed down and he had a break, Larry [the fellow who runs the dump] went through some of the stuff to collect what he can. ; he gets the copper, aluminium, pop cans, etc. It all helps him make a few extra bucks and I am all for it.

After the people had left, he saw a box in basically, the 'wrong' pile. It was a cardboard box in the metal pile. So he went over to pick it up and put into cardboard recycling....... it was heavy. When he opened it, he found it was full of rocks; but not just any rocks.. fossils. And one of the rocks in particular was spectacular. It is a clamshell fossil, but fossilized with iron pyrites so that when it is in the sun it shine and bleams. The pictures do not do it justice, but here are a couple of shots of it. I do not know why anyone would toss this though.

tossed it out. Here, the people who manage the dump, put bids in to get the dump for 1 year. They recycle everything, and sort thru what they can turn a buck on. Its good they did that as I would usually come home with more stuff than I took there. I'm not good on tossing stuff out. The other part I miss on the old dumps as we used to go to them to shoot rats. Great rat control and free. Now they poison them I think, and its expensive to do. We did it for free and had a great time. We used to take the jeep or some ones convertible down at night....Park in the middle of it, then turn the lights on and get the ones running around with .22 or 410 shot guns.
Took care of the rats, sharpened the eye. That,s a no no now. They are very fussy. I took a 5 gallon bucket in with drain oil in it. I guess it had a little gas oder in it, 2 stroke oil and they would not take it. They said if it has water or gas in it, that they get fined and they will not pump out their 1000 gallon storage tank.... Lots of rules now for sure.... We get a free week in the spring and one in the fall where locals can take anything there. The rest of the time each item, has a price on it to leave off. If I take it down to the end of my driveway, put FREE sign on it, with in the day, no matter what it is it seems, its gone. Beats taking it to the dump, like old TV, or computers, most anything. We are cleaning out stuff left over from both our parents and if the kids don't want or need it or someone else, we Free Tag sale it. Saves on dump fee's, and someone else can use it... The down side is, others do it, and if I'm in my truck once again I come home with more than I left with.... Guess I need a T-Shirt with Dumpster Diver on it..

on a wreck in lake Huron back in the 60's. It was neat and I can not remember what it is called, maybe a trilobite?????? I used to know. Mine was only about an inch and a half long. Perfect shape. That was two divorces ago and I have not seen it for years.

This was maybe 2 1/2 to 3 inches wide... maybe 2 inches long.

It sure is a fascinating piece... when the sun hits it, it just glistens and sparkles.

There was a gang of us, about 5-6 kids. After school, we would all go to our homes, get out our .22s, walk through town and go to Happys' Sporting Goods and buy a box of .22 shell each. Then we all would walk through town again [sometimes on bicycles... but mostly walking] our rifles over our shoulders and go out to the dump to shoot rats. We all had a ball.. If you tried that now, there would be a SWAT team all over you.. Man, I miss the good old days.!!!!!!

As to those computers, George. You might want to think of taking out the fingers on the boards, the CPUs and the hard drive discs. I have been collecting them for some time now [about 6 months].. I have extracted over an ounce of gold and almost an ounce of platinum. When I finish with my part of the computers, I take them to the recycling where those people continue the process and take out what they can. There is no charge for them taking the computers either.

Whats the secret to melting it all down and getting it? Only thing I been melting down lately is wheel weights and sinkers and casting up bullet heads for the 38. Been filling coffee cans with them. Easier now while I can be outdoors and not breathing that stuff in.
