Here's the original Email I received:

WATER OR COKE?

This is really an eye opener...Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but, I've never seen it written down like this before.

WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE:

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a coke or a glass of water?

This is the point at which I went and did some snooping...errr, make that Snoping. Ummm,...and some side Googling (My, how the language is changing)!

First, I went to several medical and nutrition sites and found out that ALL the water facts are either true or VERY true (or close enough to the truth it isn't worth going into the variance).

As for the part on the Coke...well, that's part's been around on the net for a while (officially since 2001, but probably since 1998 or so). It seems that someone just combined two articles for the Email I received, probably to make a point that more people drink Coke than they do water and might wish to reconsider. However, that all said...

Here's what Snopes has to say about all the Coca Cola part:

ORIGIN: Many of the entries in the Water Vs. Coke posting are just simple household tips involving Coca-Cola as provided by Mr. Joey Green in his 1995 book Polish Your Furniture with Panty Hose and on his web site: http://www.wackyuses.com/coke.html .

That you can cook and clean with Coke is relatively meaningless from a safety standpoint

an experiment with a tooth in coke.as in your google it does take longer than a few days to dissolve.in actuallity it took about 3 to 6 weeks for it to start dissolving.
we also used to take old rusty bike chains and throw them in a tub of coke for a week or so and it would clean em up pretty good.then it was put in a tub of mystery oil for a week and they were like new.:)
i never really got into soft drinks that much,if i aint drinking coffee or beer, then water it is.:beers:
cool post Art!!

Bottom line is this... Too much of ANYTHING is not good for you. We have not caused obesity in your children, your teeth won't fall out if you use our products, and we are still the most recognized corporate symbol in the world. Even in National Geographic, I've seen pics of naked Pygmies (no offense if there are any reading this) standing in front of grass huts with Coke signs and bottles in the background. Pretty cool if I say so myself.

I just don't buy the whole water thing Art. Everyones metabolism is different. Sure, water is a necessity of life, but you can get it from other sources. Coffee 97% water, Iced tea 99% water. Sports drinks, fruit drinks, vegetable drinks, milk and many foods contain water just to name a few. I don't believe it is necessary to drown oneself in pure H20 to live and function at a healthy level. Sure at times and in certain climates a higher intake of "liquids" would be beneficial. There have been races that lived very well on minimal amounts of water; the Indians of the southwest for example surely didn't gulp down 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. It is claimed an Apache could run all day. The exploits of the Cochise are historically documented; I'm sure Cochise didn't lounge around in some watery oasis while achieving his legendary status. This guy probably belched dust.
