I ordered my new GT from David at Dixie

gear box

New member
I got a 8 inch coinsearch coil and the mod's that David does and a couple of other thing's. It will be shipped at the end of the week. David is a great guy to deal with and very helpful. He had a Civil War show this past week-end but still found time to answer my e-mail's. I highly recommend him. This will be one long winter. Do you guy's have any tip's on what to do with it until spring arrives? I understand that air testing doesn't work to well with Minelabs. The manual will be good reading this winter. I could familliarize myself with the tones of the threshold I suppose. I've been reading past post's about the Sov and have taken alot of note's. I think I will just print them out for easier re-reading. For the few still hunting, good luck!

Basically take a quarter and a nickle and run them past the searchcoil until those two tones are ingrained in your brain and certainly would be a good start for the Spring...
The above is for the coin hunter and of course a relic or beach hunter might ingrain another tone or two depending what your after..In other words the tones are where its at and certainly going to be a learning period depending what units you used before...I still smile to myself as when I first took a like unit out on a beach the tones threw me for a loop so get a headstart..

I was one of the guys who told you to buy it. I have an 8" 10" 12" and a Wot coil for mine, and I'm liking the 8" more and more. I've been using one form of the Sovereigns since 97 or so. David is a great person to deal with. Enjoy your machine.

Actually they do airtest pretty good and the tones you hear in an airtest are about what you will hear in the ground unless its a real deep target, and they your just gonna have to get the feel of hunting with it. I would recommend as Dan says, run some targets under the coil and get a feel for what each sounds like. That includes rings, any coins you can get your hands on, any old buttons, pulltabs etc......

good luck with it and hopefully youll get some time out even in winter.

You might want to take off the skid plate that came with it and put a good coating of Loctite brand
marine epoxy on in it's place. I did it on all of mine and have had good luck with it. Mask it off around
the outside edge where the top of the skid plate is now with tape ( i used plane old electrical tape
and it worked very well ) also wipe off the coil with some alcohol so the epoxy will bond real good.
You want to use about 3/4 of the tube to get a good coat on it. Mix it good and spread it with a el
cheapo paint brush ( I used a 1" that I cut back to half it's lenght so it would be stiffer and that helped )
It helps if you have a vice so you can clamp the shaft in it to hold it while you work on it and to keep
it from moving other wise you need someone else to hole it still and in the right position while you
work and then you have to stand it up some place untill it dryes enough that it firms up to the
point that the epoxy won't run or sag over the edge and make drips. I f you use a vice wrap the shaft
with something and clamp it just tight enough that it stays put. After it drys for a little while ( maybe
45 min. ) you want to peal off the tape to give a good clean line around the coil. You then want to
let it dry over night. The next step after it is dry is to retape it just like you did at the start then wrap
the shaft with news paper, also the coil wire. Why? So you can aply a sprayed on coating of truck
bed lining over the epoxy. This will do two things for you, first it makes it look like a real pro did the
job and at the same time it makes a wear off layer that you can see. As you scrub the coil on the
ground this will wear off exposeing the epoxy so you can keep track of when to do a touch up job.
You can find the bed liner at most any auto parts ( I use Dupli- Color brand ) it will dry in about 5 min.
or so and then remove the tape and you are ready to use. Watch out for over spray when you apply
this as it will spray a good ways Best to do out in the yard and hold the shaft by hand. Spray at an angle
to cover the edge but not to the point that you get it on top of the coil. This will NOT cut down on the
depth or sensitivity of the coil it will protect it better than the skid plate and last a whole lot longer. HH

Thanks guy's I will definatly be checking out the tones air testing diffrent thing's. The machine was shipped tonight along with a couple books by Andy Sabisch. Thanks again
