I've wanted a metal detector for a couple years now.I've been researching forums.I drove my self crazy trying to figure out what to get.I ordered a Vaquero. Now to learn the machine(as soon as it gets here)There is a playground of a school that burned down in the 60's a half mile away. It's calling me.

If you spend some time with the Vaquero I think you will love it. I do not have a problem with ground mineralization in my area so I opted for a Cibola which has a preset ground balance. This was my first detector also, and I have spent a lot of time with it learning the different responses from various metals. After learning the detector I don't think I would be happier with another detector at any price. A small test garden will make learning your detector much easier in my opinion.

You made the right choice kickback. It is an awesome machine, and if you spend some time with a good set of headphones.....you are gonna love it!

if you have not ordered one, go ahead and order yourself a pinpointer, your experience will be at least 100% better if you have a pinpointer. I use a Sherlock DTS Pro with my Tejon and it make's a world of difference. It is the most cost effective pinpointer but the vibraprobe is a better one but cost's more and there is one that is even more and better but i can't remember the name of it... the Sherlock works just fine though. It will save you a lot of digging and working with your hands.... make's life much easier...
