Seem like the main focus or expectation for the CTX is to be able to go back to those "hunted out sites" we all have. I know some claim that no site is ever hunted out. But we all know that after working a good site for a while, there becomes a time when there seems to be the days that dont produce. I surely have a few like that. My CTX is scheduled for delivery on Weds and I have not seen many posts with great finds, specifically at hunted out sites. Well guys, if you have been successful at those sites, please respond and post some pics. Sorry for the diatribe, but I needed to ask, been keeping me awake at night with dreams of the great finds to come. HH, Mike
I think some people miss the point. Whether or not this machine has more depth, my opinion is that it is:
1. The ability to see coins next to junk, and to present that information in a coherent, recognizable format, that will set this detector apart.
2. Excellent programmability from the computer
3. Believe it or not, I think the GPS and Mapping capabilities are a GREAT addition. For those of us that hunt in the wild, open spaces, it s not easy to return to tose places with consistencty. That alone will assist in recovery of items, such as from a battle site, fort, or large area of searching.
Greater depth can be obtained through the use of a larger coil. Any detector can do that pretty well. It is those abilities listed above, plus others, that prompted me to spend my money to buy a monster machine. When I have mastered this beast, as I mastered my E-Trac, I expect it to produce on an unparalleled scale.
I think you'll find that hunters that have used the E-trac will start to see results in heavy hunted area's. I say this because they will be able to set the machine up to do what they want from there own experience level with the E-trac.Those that are moving up from a GT or Excalibur won't see results as fast. Again we all know that anybody who knows there detector well will always out hunt the hunter with the best detector money can by if the can't work it correctly! I say this and I may go out and find the greatest find of a life time tomorrow, but it will be because the coil went over it not because I have a CTX I have dug 180 targets thus far not one was because it's CTX.My Excalibur and GT would have found them also. I have not stood over an iffy target yet and worked it to a good signal. I am sure that day will come? It's not the CTX fault, its because I am new to computer based machine and am at the bottom of a steep learning curve.IMHO

I have read a few posts where CTX users have found coins that were found in a hunted out location, but I think the main objective for alot of users right now is to get used to their machine and know the settings to be able to make adjustments in the field. Give it a few more weeks of hands on experience, and you will see more success stories to come.
Great question and I hope this post will eventually be filled with reports showing the capabiities of the 3030 over other machines.
I've got a spot that has been hunted for 30 years by many detectorists. But when I hunted it with my E-Trac, I pulled out 6 or 7 Mercs, 3 Rosies, quite a few Wheats and a WLH. That told me that no one had been there before with a deep-seeking machine like the E-Trac and knew how to use it amongst the iron that is so prevelaent there. I think there is still more silver because I didn't dig any of the 35-50's - you know, the targets that are a sold 35-50. Some of those targets could be silver. And there has to be more silver there being masked by iron because there is so much iron there that my E-Trac will null for full sweeps in some areas.
I get my 3030 Wednesday and the first place I'll go is to this spot. It will be a great test for two reasons:
1) Those 35-50's may come in as good signals with the 3030 assuming it can go a little deeper.
2) The 3030 may be able to sniff more silver out of the iron because of it's advanced VDI capabilities - kuletule poined out.
Time will tell but, unfortunately for me, it's going to be several weeks before I can go detecting because I had my hip replaced three weeks ago.
I have hunted several spots already that we have gone over thoroughly with the Big-E and the results have varied. I have definitely found stuff that I have asked myself "how did I miss that?" while other spots we have offered virtually nothing new - the e-Tracs had done an effective job to say the least.
My observations up to this point are that under certain conditions that favor the use of the much improved ferrous mode on the CTX there is stuff hiding that was missed. In most parks that I've hunted with the e-Trac the last 3 years there is a moderate amount of iron in the ground. In order to cover territory, I tended to hunt in multi tone conductive mode and got the most out of it. Going back and slowly hunting it with TTF was effective at times, but is hard to do in large parks (it wore me out looking at the screen every time a conductive target passed under my coil). With The CTX it is so much faster and easier just listening for the tones you want to go after. You can hunt in much the same way and at the same speed that the e-Trac does in multi. This is where I have been finding some good targets that I've missed. Not killing it mind you - had to work for them most of the time - but again, this just speaks to how good the other FBS machines are. More time over target will improve my skills with the 3030 and in the right places it will be a killer for sure.
Tonight I found a wheat cent at 8" that had 2 nails and some other iron junk in the hole with it. The TID was pretty accurate and the sound was understandably choppy, but it was repeatable. This showed me the capabilities of this machine - if only it would have a silver dollar!

Mike,
Any time I take ANY new machine (not just the CTX) to a new site I always find something I missed. No place is truly hunted out. Every machine does things differently.
I have hunted several spots already that we have gone over thoroughly with the Big-E and the results have varied. I have definitely found stuff that I have asked myself "how did I miss that?" while other spots we have offered virtually nothing new - the e-Tracs had done an effective job to say the least.

Hey Doc, in my ongoing retrieval of information to build an image of "Can the CTX find coins below iron", your post caught my eye. Questions - Were the nails above the coin? By how much? Off to the left or right? Did you see the iron and coin on the screen as well as hear it? Thanks for doing my survey ;-)
Albert: I can't really tell the precise association between the coin and the iron other than the nails and iron scraps were found first. I did get both the penny and the iron on the screen at the same time - the sound was a mix of iron and high tone as well -
Now I see this on the screen a lot when falsing happens, but the sound of a false is usually iron then a high tone "pulling off" of the grunt. This one was a rapid switching from iron to high tone - as if the processor was jumping back and forth rapidly. As I circled the target it was the same - again - usually an iron false will go away or change when you move around an iron target (from my experience). That's why I dug this one.
As many of you know that have read my posts over the years, I'm not afraid to say what I think of a new detector, coil, meter, probe or other detecting product... I often take my new stuff to a nearby old school playground.. There is a pretty high amount of trash and obstacles like steel pipes etc to get a feel of the new stuff.. About a year ago, maybe 10 hunts ago I got a deep wheatie out of there with a new to me Explorer II with a Pro Coil.. About a year before that maybe 20 hunts ago I got a war nickel on a first hunt l with a V3 with a high tone assigned to nickels.. Last Saturday with the 3030 on its maiden voyage I was able to recover 2 wheaties in about 3 hours ..While this may not seem like much to most of you, this is the most Ive gotten out of this place at one time in many years.. Both coins were 7-8" deep and both had iron in the hole with them.. I feel the 3030 is going to find you more good targets in some of your old sites but its not going to be a night & day difference from a Explorer/ Etrac like some are saying.. Looking forward to getting the 6" coil when it become available.... I really miss the X-1 Probe and the 6x8 SEF.... Im glad I got it and look forward to learning it better. .wildherre
Reeseb, your last line caught my eye. I've had both hips replaced at different times with the Stryker ceramic on ceramic prothstetics. Take your time and walk...a whole lot. I started detecting about 9 weeks after my last one by working the beach with a lightweight long handled aluminum scoop. The up and down of dirt digging will truly test your mettle. Try after a few pain killers...if your tolerance to meds and your ability to navigate are not problems. Seriously, I don't know how far from a beach you are located but it's an easier way to get back into detecting. I hope you have a speedy recovery and mind your hip "precautions", life is great minus the diseased hip joints!
I've been lurking the CTX 3030 forum to gain some insight as to how I'd use this tool if I pull the trigger to purchase one. It's got some seriously fine features.

I think the best way to compare one detector to another is to test them in the field on undug targets.
Say you go to a hunted out spot and get a hit, go get your other detector and sweep towards the known hit and see if it hits.
Then dig it.
Also, I hunt some places over and over and the only hits I get are iffy trash targets. So I dig them to clean up the area.
I used the etrac in place that used to produce a lot of silver. Dug out a lot of trash etrac and no silver. After a few hunts I went back to using the se pro and pulled two barbers.
Have been hunting that area a lot now with the se pro and finding nothing but trash. Think I might start using the etrac in that area again.
If you remove enough trash from a hunted out site any decent modern detector will find the goods.
I would be interested to here about how the 3030 done in a hunted out site compared to another detector on the same undug target.
