I need info on the best camera that can take closeups on coins --Etc & can be used for "normal" family stuff. Thanks!

It depends in how serious of a photographer you are (or want to become) and/or how much money you can spend.

Many of the "point & shoot" digital cameras have good macro capabilities built-in, whereas digital SLR's require the addition of a macro lens - both are much more expensive. Some makes of P&S cameras, such as, Nikon are known for their excellent macro abilities. However, many makes are pretty good. I use a Canon A95 which has very good macro capability (see pic below).

Of course these P&S's are pretty fair as a general family camera as well although I recommend getting one with manual modes (rather than one that is only automatic and doesn't allow you to make finer adjustments). This ability to make adjustments is nice to have if you decide to get more involved with photography.

I highly recommend you visit www.dpreview.com and read the more detailed specs (especially before you make a final decision). They give a lot of info including the camera's macro performance.

Good luck!

Hello,

Purchased a new NIKON Coolpix 4600. Really like it! However, I saw the new "waterproof" Pentax OptioWP the other day and kinda wish I had seen it before I purchased the NIKON. It appears to have basically same features, but the OptioWP will focus at 1cm in Macro and is "waterproof" (I believe the specs indicate to 5' for 30 minutes) I like to carry with me at the beach so it would have been a little "safer" to carry down there. I used to carry a waterproof Minolta film type camera "in and about" the water.
