I've been researching metal detectors and am more confused than ever. I wish to purchase a good detector, but not a terribly expensive one. My grandchildren are coming to visit this summer and I thought it would be fun to go "treasure hunting" with them. I would need a detector that is reliable and would not turn out to be a disappointment to my grandchildren. Can anyone here recommend a detector that is both reasonable AND reliable? Thanks in advance.

and also for kids, I would recommend the Tesoro Compadre. My son, who is 5 has one. It is light, has decent depth and discrimination, and easy to use. Best part is, you can buy one new for under $200 <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Hope this helps...

I've been selling metal detectors for 20 years and carry a variety. I help people choose the right model all the time. You can email or call me and I'll be glad to give you my opinion and advice. I think your going to have a fun Summer with your Grandchildren. I purchased a silver u max for my wife and it is a great machine. Just over 2 lbs with battery, simple to use, great discriminator, and life time warranty!
The main advantage over the compadre that I seen is that the search coil isn't hard wired into the control box.
They run about $240.
