I need help on a second Salt Water Beach Machine.

I have a Sea Hunter Mark II that has been a great machine this past year. I have found about 9 gold rings and a bunch of silver and metal rings in the surf this past summer, my first year of surf hunting. I love the depth of the PI but would like to add a machine with discrimination and the same depth as the Pi maybe with tone Id. Two machines come to mind the Mine Lab Sovereign GT and the Excal II as possible candidates. As you all know the Excal has a history of mechanical problems for the most part and I am waiting for Mine Lab to step up and fix these problems before purchasing. The Sovereign GT has similar characteristics but is not waterproof, but has an excellent reputation. I live on the east coast of Florida and want the best machine for the wet sand and also for the shallow surf. The Sea Hunter is great in the surf probably as good as any other PI machine, but not so good in the wet sand as other machines
I would appreciate you all helping this newbe in making this important decision. Be free to suggest other models also. I draw on your hunting experience.
Thanks, Marty

i like my BHID--12 coil dig it all--it's sand--walk tall and cary a big scoop they say--it's true i am on the fence with the excal but hear about the problems and can live without them--i am looking for a second water machine myself and might look into getting an older surfmaster two amphibian

It all depends on how deep you want to take it into the water. I have knee deep with my Sovereign chest mounted. I personally like the versatility of the Sovereign more. As an added tip I will tell you that the older Sovereigns still kick butt.

I have a excal and love it. No problems at all. I think the problems they were having were during there factory move. I am buying another one for Christmas ;) its for my wife. If you do get a excall get a strait shaft for it.

For shallow surf the Sovereign should blow your mind. Just KEEP it dry. I put my control box in a small pouch and hang it over my neck and one shoulder. If you think you might get it wet, get a minelab excalibur, it is the same machine but water proof. If you can keep it dry, shallow surf, a Minelab Safari might go a little deeper than the Sovereign and I think it is lighter. It would be a great all around machine. Question: Do you dig a lot of nails with your PI machine? People have fires on the beach where I live and the beach is loaded with nails. I was wondering if they would be worth digging to find deep rings. I might need to dig up the entire beach LOL.

I find nails but more often those darn bobby pins and pieces of rust. The bobby pins do double beep, but if targets are slim I dig them all just in case there is a ring hanging around. The Sovereign GT sounds like a good wet sand detector with little mechanical problems, now to find a good deal on one of them. Thanks for all the input; makes my job easier. Marty

EasySwing, go to the Minelab Sovereign Elite/GT and Excaliber forum, go to page 2, and look about 3/4 of the way down the page (as of this date and time, because it will move down the page and to other pages as time goes on), and read waterproofing Sovereign xs-2a pro/related-how to by Burbank Bob.In his title the word related means any of the other realated units to his which would include the GT. It shows how to waterproof your unit. It will not be for scuba diving, but will protect your unit if a wave goes over you, you drop your unit in the water, want to detect in the rain, and also protect your control unit from the salty fog in the mornings. Their is another post by Cupajo up the page, but his case is to big in my opinion, the one by Burbank Bob is not only practical but nice looking.

I had an Excaliber for 10 years with no problems. Traded it in for an Excaliber II & haven't a bit of problem with it. I highly recommend it!
