I need HELP!!! Max, Mike, Ron, any Excal owners ..._ _ _ ...

I got around to working on my Excal that quit on me last week while hunting with Max.
I drained the battery down with a bulb, checked the charger voltage (18V), then began recharging.
Meanwhile I read up on charge problems in the Sov/Excal forums.
One post said to remove the coil cover, check for black sand, etc.
Okay, I pried it off, and this is what I found. I have to think water has been seeping into the inner coil causing hate and discontent.
My solution is to reseal the joint lines with the best waterproof stuff i can find. THEN, MAX, i would like to hear what you do as far as coating the underside of yours. You other guys too, if you have any similar problems, what do you suggest?
I'm going hunting tomorrow, and theres no rush, as I have the Elite, and my CZ-20 to work with. but this line crack is crying for a fix. can you guys point me in the right direction, please?? Most grateful for any advice. Bottomfeeder. Jim in Iowa

I think it's likely that you should get a new coil. I'm no coil expert, but that salt water has probably permanently damaged the inside of the coil and perhaps caused a short that may have harmed the detector. And sealing it will be a short term fix but it probably won't hold. I would just get a new coil for it. As for the coating for the bottom, it's Loctite Aquamarine Epoxy.

The dumb thing acted like it wanted to work the other day, maybe the fresh water lake flushed it out. Time will tell. Thx Mike.

Don't waste time, summer is half over. Get a new coil asap.

If you have cleaned it out real good and dried it out with alcohol
and heat, and it works as it should, maybe consider this. Since it
isn't any good like it is with the crack, get some liquid epoxy,
glue the crack and clamp it(using wax paper/? to keep it from
sticking to the clamps. Then sand the bottom and sides and sand the
inside of the coil cover and clean with solvent. Then coat the
bottom and sides with the epoxy and the inside of the cover well
and pour a little extra in the cover and push the coil down into
it until it runs out.Keep it weighted on some wax paper until it sets
and trim/sand the excess off. It would be permanent-right or wrong-
but all you have to lose is the epoxy and some time.If it didn't
work then you can still send it in for repair/new coil. Just a
thought Jim. Good luck on it any way you go.HH Joe

At this point your coil is basically bad! Yes you could try drying it out and you could try sealing it but the fact is saltwater has been inside the coil and will most likely continue to corrode the drain wire that Minelab wraps around the shielding making your shielding intermittent at best. It may seem to work fine when it's dry and in the air but then go crazy once you have it back in the water even after it's been resealed. So you really need to have the coil replaced. But there is a bright side....if you send it to Minelab you are looking at a $300 repair but you could turn a bad thing into an opportunity and have inline waterproof fittings placed in your coil wire (one's like Sunray or Doc sell) and have some other coil wired into your detector or even just have a new Minelab coil wired in. But from now on whenever you have a coil problem you would only have to undo the fitting and put on a new coil with a new waterproof fitting. This way you would not have to send it in for a very expensive repair in the future and you have the option of getting different brand or different size coils for your Excalibur. JMHO
