I'm a White's owner at the present time, but it's an older model and need to upgrade.Quantum II
I think I miss many coins because of this, and at the ocean beach finds are far and between.
I've heard many say good things about the MXT and always thought it was more for the west with it's gold prospecting, so I contacted my dealer and the price is $700.00.
He said it runs at a higher freq. so it picks up silver coins better is this true?????
Can anyone give your opinion on the model for coinshooting and some jewelry.
Thanks

Bruce,
Yeah for strictly coin shooting there are better choices IMHO. Your dealer is wrong about the higher frequency being better for coins. Haven't seen a high frequency machine yet (over 10-12 Khz) that is better on US copper/silver coins than dedicated coin machines.
That said, with the proper coil selection the MXT will find most coins others will see and for certain specific applications may exceed the dedicated coins machines. In areas with low to moderate mineralization however, it just doesn't keep up in the depth department.
I've been attacked in the past for stating this, but these are my own personal opinions based on many hours of use. Not just a run thru a test garden or quick visit to a couple of sites.

I've had a mxt(here in Indiana) for almost 2 years. It is more sensitive to small gold and silver jewelry ,also nickles than the spectrum that I used for 10 years before it. It has very good depth in the ground I hunt, and quick target response. I get 40 plus hours use from rechargeable AA nimh batteries. I also use it(mxt) in shallow fresh water with very good results. I love it.

Tom,
This sounds like a case where area make a big difference. I never checked my gound conditons so I cant say mine is mild or hot, but depth has been great with the MXT I have used. My wife got a 1840 seated dime at 9 inches with no problem with the 5X10 DD coil. I dug many coins that have been deep and remember a old brass key at 12 inches with the stock coil. I have also did a side by side comparison with the Minelab Explorer and seen where the Explorer can get a few the MXT cant, but these have been mostly with iron beside them. I have also seen a few deeper than the MXT can see too, but very few of them. I do find the MXT a real easy detector to use and a fun one too, plus seen where it can get coins many of the top of the line cant. One of the things nice about the MXT is it can be used for many differnt types of detecting and by far my best Whites i have ever used.
Like I say this may be due to the area I live as the MXT does real well for us around here.

Rick,
A 9" dime is a tough target for any machine, with the 5X10 DD it is near impossible here. 7-8" on copper pennys were the max depths I could get.

I’ve been a long time Whites owner, and I just got my MXT a little over 2 weeks ago and I have really been enjoying it, and that’s what it’s all about, is having fun with it.
When people talk about depth you always here about that deep coin they dug, well for me about 99% of the coins I dig are less than 4 inches deep and that because I hunt parks and schools and just about any place that people gather. Where you want the depth is in older sites, to find those deep coins.
As far as how the MXT is in trashy areas, I’ve been pleased with it.
I can think of one place that I would want a smaller coil, it’s where a hotel once stood and burnt down in the 1950’s, and is a vacant lot now that catches all the trash.
I can’t say how it is beech hunting because I don’t live near any beaches, it’s something I would like to do one of these days.
Just in the short time that I’ve owned the MXT I would have to give it a 9 out 10. It’s very easy to learn and use and I find it ID’s target well. One thing that has impressed me about it is that it can sniff out and ID nickels with ease. Nickels are tuff little critters because of all the pull tabs in this world. I keep track of my finds and my recovery of nickels has doubled and my recovery of pull tabs has dropped off.
The preset of 9 is just a little to hot for this area so I turn the gain down to 6-7.
One other thing I have learned along the way, and I’ll tell you in a short story about it. About Three years ago my wife had just gotten a Garret GTA 350 with target ID. Well I was out taking it for a spin at the fair grounds when I came across this older gentleman with a Garret that had to be as old as he was. We talked for a while and I showed him all the bells and whistles of the wife’s new machine. Then we started hunting and he was going over the same are I just went prior to meeting him. After a while I stopped and went over to say good bye and ask him if he had any luck. Well he had over $2 in change verse my ½ dozen pennies and pouch full of trash.
Moral of the story is: it’s the person more than the machine that makes the difference.
I think about him often.

I've had my detector for about a month now and have found about 800 coins with the stock 950 coil. Ground minerization is moderate and I'm not finding anything deeper than about 4 to 5 inches. I'm getting better everyday knowing my MXT and think that it is a fantastic machine!!! I will be getting a smaller coil, 4X6 shooter, anyday now and am anxious to try it out. I just know that there are deeper coins in this trashy area that I've been working. Ron
