I bought an ace 250 2 month's, I can't pin point when I think I've got it, it proves me wrong to day I get a solid hit on a quarter in the coin mode pinpoint at 4" dig and nothing
rescan and it's moved about 6" I dig and nothing rescan it's moved again when I gave up I had a hole 18" x 12" deep rescan still have a quarter at 4" right
over the center of the hole 12" deep. I was at the lake and no electrical anything within a half mile. What is my problem. I have an old compass that I can pinpoint within a 2" circle but little depth
Please Help
Joe

Turn down your sensitivity and try again. You might be picking up phantom signals resulting from too much of an output signal.

Sounds like the ground is too mineralised for the ACE. Can you get the sig to notch out. Does the sig disappear when you lift the coil about two inches of the ground, You have chased the signal down to about a foot and it is still there, if it disappears when you lift the coil a couple of inches then it is ground noise. Signals that that seem to move about are almost always ground noise .

Unfortunately any metal detector will pick up real deep badly rusted iron and call it a high coin in many instances..Of course the depth meter is off as its calibrated for coins..Usually these signals will just cover a large area while pinpointing whereas a coin will cover a small area which is a dead giveaway to an experienced detectorist...Personally I would get a large piece of carboard put a quarter under it and move the cardboard around when you have pinpointed stick a screwdriver thru till you get where you can pinpoint dead on. Perhaps you are pinpointing wrong but would bet my first assumption is right on and large iron can be picked up really deep. As far as old detectors they didn't go very deep but most pinpointed very easily and your transition from old to new will take time...Detuning is another aspect for spot on pinpointing but for the time being work on the cardboard method and raise the coil to simulate depth and all should fall into place. 20 years later still remember the early days where pinpointing and ground balancing 10 turn balance units were a nightmare and feel all you need is practice and time in the field to become competent...Come to think of it thats why Mr.Garrett came out with the gti and gtp series to tell size very quickly on a target..
