I need advice on a second coil for my xterra 50

I have a xterra 50 with the factory coil , which is to large for some of the trashy areas I hunt and I would like to get a smaller coil. I have heard alot about the dd coils but have never used one. I also take my xterra 50 to the beach occasionally since it seems to do better there than my xlt. I was wondering if I should stay at the medium frequency coil or get the high frequency coil and if so which one. thanks

As a coin hunter I usually prefer the lower frequency coils. And, for the moderately mineralized sites I hunt, the concentric coils do very well. However, for trashy sites, I like the 6-inch DD at 18.75 a bit better than the 6-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz. I know that goes against everything I'd believed before trying them both. But I think the separation characteristics of the DD are superior to the concentric. Depth wise, I don't think there is much (if any) difference. And frankly, if you taped over the labels, I doubt I could tell them apart until I started isolating targets. But then, the DD is the one I want on the end of my rod. JMHO HH Randy

If the only other thing you were going to do with an additional coil was hunt the beaches, I'd probably opt for the 6X10 elliptical, waterproof it and allow yourself to cover more sand with each swath. But if you are looking for a "second coil" that will hunt in any situation, separate targets with the best of them, and be sensitive to those small pieces of gold jewelry on the beach, I'd go with the 6-inch DD at 18.75 khz. You'll have to make more passes than with the larger coils. But in my sites, the 6-inch DD will hunt as deep as the 6X10. JMHO HH Randy
