I NEED A RUBBER TIPPED TOWEL...DARN

Sorry you nicked her, happens sometimes. It is unfortunate that it happens on the better finds, maybe an electronic pinpointer would help?

Happens more often than I'd like, electronic probe (Sun Ray) really helps, and a brass probe to get an exact location might help too. Nice half, sorry about the scratch. I dinged a key date 1893-S Barber half this spring. Still hard to look at knowing it was in the ground all that time just fine and then a second before it comes to light again it gets a nasty scar. Hazard of the hobby.

Nice find. That's why I dig a plug with my Lesche but use a Sunray probe and plastic composite hand trowel from Home Depot to scoop whatever out of the hole...

Below is a copy and paste from another forum, so credit goes to others.....

The 1861 O half dollar * generally are thought of as "confederate coins" even though they bare the US govt mint markings -- the us govt minted 330,000 of the jan of 1861 -- on the last day of jan 1861 --the state of Louisiana military forces took over the mint * then later the confederate govt --- using the us govt dies ans the silver "in stock" the two "confederate" groups struck 2,202,633 coins --or roughly about 7 times the amount of the coins made by the US Govt in jan of 1861 -- because of this fact --1861 "o" halfs are normally thought of as Confederate money ---the coin has been altered --into a woman on a chamber pot --aka "potty dollars" ---when made on a "trade dollar"

general Butler --the commander of union forces in mew Orleans was so hated by the women of new Orleans for the order he gave regarding the women of the city that many of the women of the city painted his likeness on the bottom of their chamber pots --their nickname for him was "the beast"

as a new Orleans made civil war era coin --the potty figure might be linked to the women's hatred of butler --or as a bit of civil war era dirty "trench art" carved coin art -- a very interesting bit of history in my view .Ivan S.

Here are a few links with some discussion and a few pics of "potty dollars". Not a ton of info out there.

I have a friend that uses a Raptor and he has scratched many a coin, I think it has to do with the curve of the blade....
This is his best coin, note the back side, top left of the coin...
