I Need A Little Help Picking A Long Handled Sand Scoop

I'm going to visit my sister and bother-in-law in Houston in a few months and go and stay at their beach home in Galveston. I need a long handled beach scoop for mostly dry sand and some wet sand detecting. I don't want something really expensive, but I don't want something cheap either. I will only use it a few times a year at the ocean and may use it some at a few close by fresh water lake beaches. I want one that's light weight and reasonably strong. I won't be going into the water with it, just at the edge of the surf and water line. I'm pretty sure that I want one that I can push into the sand with my foot. Is the wire mesh better than the ones with the holes? What's the best handle size and shape? A two piece one would be nice, but will it be strong enough? I'm totally confused and need all kinds of help.

Thanks

You Putz! Hows about I bring you mine since I'm looking out the window at a foot of snow? I have a nice two piece aluminum scoop with a 5" bucket that I bought from an American Mfg...I chop with it like its an axe, instead of tromping on it as if it were a shovel, it is really tough, light and comfortable to carry and employ. I dont know the name of it, but I'm sure you will come up with something similar. Or, as I say, I'll bring it down, and do some repairs at your inlaws place, fix that deck, swap out the garbage disposal, water heater, toilet guts and wax rings, maybe even a little roofing repair, in trade for watching over you and keeping you from setting their house on fire! :ranting:

Thanks for all the replies.

If my memory serves me correctly, there's a lot of packed sand at Galveston. It has been years since I have been there. I think the bare minimum that I should get would be a light duty aluminum one that I can push into the ground with my foot. One that will work well in dry loose sand as well. It appears that the ones with the wire mesh swift sand easier. I also wonder about handle design. What angle, shape and length is the best?

Dry sands the easy one..... but in the oat meal those targets disappear quickly if you dont get them in the first scoop. But would i spend a ton of money if i was just visiting..... na, id take Mud up on his offer.

RTG makes a very good scoop as does many other manufactorers but regardless of your choice get a good scoop and you will not be sorry. Lots of swimming areas around where you live so you might think about a stainless or aluminum with a stainless lip. Good luck on your trip and in your choice of a scoop. HH :minelab:

Good point, there are a bunch of fresh water swimming holes in my area. Also I found out that aluminum and salt water don't mix. You will get black all over you from the corrosion. I've narrowed it down, to being positive that I want a scoop that I can push into wet and dry sand with my foot.

Can someone tell me why dealers don't list the weights on all their scoops? It's very frustrating when they don't list the weight or the price!!!
