I need a good light detector for the Beach...

I have a Minelab Sovereign Elite and I LOVE this detector. However I have shoulder impingement syndrome and it is hard to swing. My arms are getting better but I would love a lighter detector. I put the control box in a backpack but the 10" coil and arm are still heavy on this machine. If I can't find another as good on the beach.... I will probably just keep it. With all of these new detectors out, is there anything close to the Sovereign? I also would rather be able to ID targets. The Garrett AT Pro is looking good to me right now but I don't know how it will compare. Any advice would be much appreciated. Money is an issue to. What is the best bang for the buck?

Thank you!
Gregg

i would say a ace 350, or maybe g2 or whites coinmaster/ prism series they all are pretty light

Fisher Gold But Pro with 11"DD coil goes deep in dry sand...would not be as deep as the sovereign in wet sand though (my opinion)..Gold Bug is about 1 lb lighter than the At Pro. I dont think you will find a vlf machine that will do as well as the Sov. in the wet sand. Tek. Omega with 11" DD coil has good depth in dry sand, and is about the same weight as Gold Bug. I have used both Omega and Gold bug in all metal, and Tesoros in dry sand, and all do well. On one occasion I was using my Cibolain dry sand and seemed to be getting better depth than a guy using a Sovereign with a 15" WOT....maybe it was technique, or the way I was holding my mouth:) There are many light machines out there which will give you good depth on dry sand, but are limited once they get into wet sand/water. HH

I have both the Elite and AT Pro. The AT Pro is not very lite to swing either. I have a HH PI with both coils F/S in the classified section. The 8 inch coil works awesome for what you want. The controls are all in the headphones. It doesn't get any better for the weight issue.

You might want to look at the Detectorpro Wader also. It works well at salt water beaches, including the wet sand. Runs at less than 3 kHz so its great on silver and mid to large sized jewelry and that frequency seems to handle the salt a lot better than most other VLF detectors. You probably not hit on small gold though.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will look into those detectors. I don't think I can use a PI machine on these beaches because they burn wood all the time here. WAY to many nails. It would drive me nuts. It is looking like I am going to need to keep my Sovereign. I think it is time for Minelab to re design them. They should focus on making them lighter in my opinion.

Something thing else about the Wader is the battery life is exceptional. Waterproof, lightest and best battery life combined with fairly low price makes it a contender for a sweet back up!

I would agree with many here about the Detector Pro line of detectors. That is the nice niche they fill.

The detectors are light wieght and still pack a punch for the price. All the electronic are in the head phones.

How about getting a lighter coil for you Sovereign? Either from Coiltek or DeTech.

I agree, you won't find a lighter (also better) machine then one with a slimline excalibur coil (7.5), and the electronic hip mounted...mine on a straight alum shaft, backpack, remote pp handle

Hi Gregg, I hurt my arm 2 years ago and could not even use my wife Xtera. I built an adjustable bungee support that bring the weight to almost zero, I was able to use the heavy Excalibur for hours. May be... ?

Good luck

Hey Gregg,
Sorry to hear about your arm- since I figured out we are hunting the same beaches...
You might want to try connecting helium balloons to your coil or putting roller skates under it. Or maybe if you only hunted by moonlight?

Obviously just kidding! Use my beach, take my prizes, its a (sort of) free country!
Hope to see you around, good luck and HH! Tom
